papasteve asked Michael J. Sullivan:

I know this is going to be an off-the-wall question, but why don't writers have their characters poop or pee? Brandon Sanderson, in one of his recent novels has the character Wayne use the "crapper", and has Wayne even ponder all the names that people have for the "crapper." I thought, "Wow, that's the first time I've read something like that."

Michael J. Sullivan Well, I don't claim to speak for all authors -- and some do indeed have their characters going to the bathroom. All I can say is that for me, I'm not writing as a journalistic reporting of a person's day, I'm showing events that are necessary to move the plot forward, and generally that doesn't happen during such mundane times. Does that make sense?
