Morgan Golladay asked Jacqueline Winspear:

Maisie has had a very definite change in her social status, rising from "below the stairs," to "owning the stairs." How typical was this change in post-War England? As a fictional character, was this based on particular historic models, or was it part of the development of your heroine's character?

Jacqueline Winspear Morgan, Maisie's transition in social status was not typical, but it was not unheard of either. I have not based Maisie's character on any real person, but her character development and the change in circumstances all come about organically - they just ask to be part of the story.
