Adrienne asked Ruta Sepetys:

In Salt to the Sea, you have four different narrators; what was the writing process like to write four distinct voices? How did you stay true to the characters' voices and not mix up whose voice was whose? Also, you have three really lovable characters and one creepy one--was it harder to write Alfred than the other three? Thanks for writing such powerful, meaningful books.

Ruta Sepetys Hi Adrienne!
Writing with four different narrators was challenging, but exciting too! I wrote the book in the exact order that you read it, swapping voices each chapter. But sometimes I would go back and read through only one character's chapters, for example, to make sure that they had continuity and flow. I found that helpful and did it often. And here's something crazy - Alfred's chapters were actually the easiest to write. I know, so creepy! But his voice was so distinct and strong it came through loud and clear in my head. Thanks for asking! :)
