Barbara Signorelli
Barbara Signorelli asked Ruta Sepetys:

What kept you going when you and your family had to live through the holocaust?

Ruta Sepetys Hello Barbara!

I was born in the U.S. and did not live through the horrors of World War II. My father, however, fled from Lithuania and some of his extended family members were deported to Siberia. When I was researching my first book, "Between Shades of Gray," I interviewed many survivors. They explained that when they faced suffering, hardship, loss and pain, their internal spirit stepped in and took over. I asked how they defined "internal spirit" and they told me that it's the part of us that clings to hope and life when all is lost, it's the driving force behind our will to live. It made a very profound impression on me that I carry with me to this day. Thanks for asking!
