What books or authors do you enjoy reading?

Rae Meadows I read a lot of contemporary literary fiction, spurred on by the smart, thoughtful reviews of my Goodreads community. But I like to break it up too with nonfiction and memoir--J. D. Vance's Hillbilly Elegy is on my nightstand at the moment. I certainly love reading the classics--I have Anna Karenina queued up to reread--and there are plenty of books on my need-to-read list, like Ulysses and Infinite Jest, but somehow there never seems to be enough time. Some writers I love: Elizabeth Strout, Elena Ferrante, Marilynne Robinson, Tim O'Brien, Cormac McCarthy, Louise Erdrich, Alice Munro, Richard Yates, Toni Morrison, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf.
