Goodreads asked Dave Johnston:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Dave Johnston If you are writing to be a commercial success, then you need to learn to "write-by-numbers". The literary industry seems focused on only publishing existing authors, or brand new books that fit a certain model. There are plenty of courses you can go on to start you on your way.
If you are writing for the experience and thrill of just a few people reading it, then go write in your own style, and to hell with the critics. If you've edited it and produced the best you think you can, then self publish it and other people out there will appreciate it to. Self publishing is free and easy, so why not?
