Goodreads asked M.C. Planck:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

M.C. Planck The same place I get all my ideas. I break into other, better writer's houses and go through their files.

Usually when I see an idea I like I swipe the whole file. But sometimes I just alter a few words and leave the file so that the author doesn't realize I stole his idea. For instance, I was in Stephen King's house a few years ago and saw he had an idea for a story about a small Texas town that gets buried under a freak sandstorm and has to survive until the Army Corps of Engineers can dig them out. He called it "Under the Dunes." I changed a few letters, and that's how we got that stupid TV show.
