Angela | 1934 comments PLEASE DISREGARD THESE RULES!!! The latest challenge will outline the rules in the titled thread

I have both Lori (Super Mod) and Karen (the person who created this challenge in her own group) to post this challenge here. It is a lot of fun to see how many shelves you can 'touch'.

Object of the Game: To have read off the most shelves from the official list below.

Start: August 1, 2009 You can start the book on July 31st but you cannot be finished with it until August 1st or after.
End: October 31, 2009

1. To have read a book off a shelf, you must read a book that is found on that particular shelf. ie. to have read book off the classics shelf, you must read a book that is found on "classics" shelf. For example, Pride & Prejudice is on the top of this shelf:my link text

2. A single book may be found on several shelves however we will only count the 1st page of top shelves for this book. For example, you may find Pride & Prejudice are found on the following shelves:my link text ... however we will only count the first page of listed shelves for this challenge (note: this is to make it easier for everybody as P&P is found on 70 pages of shelves!)

3. You don’t have to read off the shelves in any particular order of shelves.

4. The name of shelves must MATCH EXACTLY to the shelf you are trying to count. No deviations are acceptable (check the spelling off the official list below). For example one shelf reads: 2008-books and another 2008-book or childrens or children-s.

5. It is permissible to read a book that is found on a shelf you've already counted; just ignore those when you are tracking them.

6. Reporting

a. All we want you to report on the thread is the number of books you've read and the number of shelves these books are found on. Do not report titles because that will give your competitors a strategic edge; however

For example:
52 shelves
2 books

b. You must track the titles read and the shelves on your own. You can come up with your own method of tracking. I personally print the list and highlight the shelves I have hit, but others had made a excel spreadsheet.

8. Winning
The winner is one who has either read off all 350 shelves noted on the official list or who has read the most off these 350 shelves by the end date, midnight October 31 2009.

So please post your interest in participating in this challenge here

Thanks!!

Angela, looks good. I have never participated in this challenge before, so I will certainly have questions for you :)

One quick thing: the links you have in the post are not working. Can you recheck them? On the first link, I can click on ALL SHELVES, and see the hyperlinks to each one, but I think you were trying to link us to P&P, yeah?

So I guess my first question is:
I can only use ONE book found within the first 5 pages of any SHELF... is that it?

message 3: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Whoops, I fixed it!! Let me get an example up there so maybe it can be explained better. I was really confused at first so I had a lot of questions.

So that is 15 shelves for just page 1. I would continue to page 5. If you read a different book and touch 'novels' again you would not count it again. Once it has been touched you are done. You also just ignore the other shelves that are not listed here. So for example, on page one of Pride and Prej. they also have jane-austen and 1001 books, but these are not options.

message 5: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments To answer your question Lori (I hope) your ONE book can be used for the first five pages of popular shelves. Then you would use your next book for the first five pages of the popular shelves, ignoring the ones you have already touched. Does that make sense?

message 7: by Jen (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 110 comments I think I understand, and I'm going to join in! :)

message 8: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Hi Jen-I have done this twice in another group and it is a lot of fun! The good thing is that you do not really have to choose books to fit this challenge. Just hope the book you are reading touches a lot of shelves.

message 9: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) I'll play again, too! It's interesting to see which shelves I hit...a nice reminder that sometimes I need to branch out a little bit with what I read

message 10: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I always get stuck on the children's shelves because I do not really read them or the manga shelves. I also need to branch out sometimes. I will pick up a popular book and think I am going to touch all kinds of shelves and only get like 5.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) I can not wait to start!

Angela | 1934 comments Glad to see people are excited about this :)

Angela | 1934 comments Oh and welcome back Sarah! Hope you are feeling better :)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Ok Angela - I have been looking at this group for a while but thinking I had too many groups and challenges already, but you sold me.

Count me in on the shelf-a-thon. I, like you LOVE this challenge and think it can be done while doing many other challenges. I only wish I had joined this group early enough to work on the summer challenge.

message 15: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments You can still participate in the Summer Challenge and count the books you have already read from June 1st. The seasonal challenges are my favorite!! BTW-This group is great!!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) BTW - I plan on updating the excel spreadsheet if anyone wants a copy. I'll probably have it finished by the middle of next week or so.

message 17: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Thanks Lyn. I do not have excel on my computer.

message 18: by Carol (new)

Carol (caroldias) Ohhh spreadsheet is always welcome!

I´ll try to join the challenge lol I´ll do my spreadsheet today if I have time

OK, well, if people are going to get rolling on this, I can start a new folder just for this challenge. This way everyone can create thier own personal thread to track their stuff. Or would you rather run it all on this one thread?

message 20: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Just to warn you guys, this challenge is highly addictive! The good news is, it really encourages you to step outside your box and read from many different genres, including non-fiction and even childrens stuff. It's alot of fun!

message 21: by Ralph Gallagher (new)

Ralph Gallagher | 64 comments Lori wrote: "OK, well, if people are going to get rolling on this, I can start a new folder just for this challenge. This way everyone can create thier own personal thread to track their stuff. Or would you rat..."

Create a separate folder or else this thread will be ungodly long.

message 22: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments If you do a different folder, I can track progress by the week. Thanks Lori!!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Yay Angela - You did such a great job tracking for the other group.

message 24: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 79 comments This sounds super fun! I think I'm going to hop on board!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Working on updating the spreadsheet, will let you know when it is finished, then you can e-mail me for a copy.

message 26: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Actually Slayermel did the tracking, but I am looking forward to doing it!!

message 27: by Carol (new)

Carol (caroldias) Oh.... It only start on August :(

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) OK - I currently have 3 or 4 shelves less than last time. Is that correct?? If not - how do I check? How do you come up with the Official List?

message 29: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I just looked at the popular list and picked the first 350 shelves (excluding to-read and currently-reading). I counted it twice last night and had 350. Maybe I counted wrong :(

message 30: by Carol (new)

Carol (caroldias) It´s hard to copy all the list.. I just finished.

Ha.. I´m going to do a 2009 version of this challenge... than I added ONE book and I did 76 shelves with it haha it´s funny... the second book will do 3, I know it will :(

message 31: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments ok this sounds kind of neat but honestly I'm so confused with the 5 page thing on different shelves?

Are we suppose to get credit for the whole book we read? We pick from different shelves for each book right? Am I making any sense with my questions?

message 32: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments You get credit for the whole book you read. After you are finished reading the book, you go to the books main page and on the right hand side, it says popular shelves. You click on 'more popular shelves' and it will list all of the shelves that this book is on. The list can be anywhere from just one page of shelves to 100 pages of shelves, but you only count the first 5 pages of shelves. Does that make sense?

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi

message 34: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I just recounted and came up with 350... Is anyone else coming up with anything different?

Lyn be careful looking at the new popular shelves because they may have changed from last night.

message 35: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments oh ok...I think I'm getting it now.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Ya - I wasn't going to look, just need to recheck my list and see what i missed from your list. I'm sure that is the problem.

message 37: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments It took me hours to redo the list and make sure I had 350, so good luck finding that little bugger :)

message 38: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments So Angela we are going by shelves that goodreads has...like for instance I want to read a book on vampires....I would use it from the vampire shelf on goodreads or from your shelf above...and then when I figure out the book I am reading I click on that it will give me other shelves it is on? And I can use up to 5 pages of those other shelves? Sorry if I'm asking so many questions.

message 39: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (bellamy22) | 610 comments All of you must be under 35 and have had formal training on the computer!!!

I have absolutely NO IDEA what you are talking about...and this sounds fun, damnit...

message 40: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments LOL I'm not under 35.

message 41: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 15 comments I think I get it...and I'm game!

message 42: by Natalee (new)

Natalee (nataleem00) | 79 comments I'm not either... LOL... Wait, am I?!?! I never can remember. That's a sign I must be older, right??

message 43: by Carol (new)

Carol (caroldias) I´ll try to explain too.
I´ll use the Pride and Prejudice example too.
Let´s say you read the book and want to use it in this challenge... you´ll go to the books popular shelves, it is in the right of tha page, like Angela said, you will clikc "more popular shelves" and you will end up with this screen: http://www.goodreads.com/book/shelves...

Now you can see, in the end of the page, there are more than 228 popular shelves for this book. But for this challenge only the first 5 pages counts.
So you´ll go on checking all the shelves the book is, in this example : classics, fiction, favorites, classic, own etc.

I think it´s easy to print the shelves list like Angela does (The Shelves List is this one in the topic.. the 350 ones lol).
Then, when your list is ready you´ll go check them out. With Pride and Prejudice you´ll be able to check the shelves classic, fiction, favorites, classics... and any other shelf appears until the page 5 of the popular ones.

The thing is, you can only use the shelves in The List, so the shelf jane-austen will be useless.

When you read another book, you´ll do the same process, but now it´s just ignore the shelves you´ve already checked and try to find the other ones, cause the point is to check the 350.

Ie, with only ONE book, checked 76 shelfs... it was a pretty popular book. So now, the second book I´ll do I´ll ignore all the shelves I already checked... which let´s me with 274 shelves to check.

I hope you guys get it, I really hope >.< I can´t explian it in any other way LOL

message 44: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments I get it now Carol...thank you so much for the clarification. This sounds like fun. :~)

message 45: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I think you did a good job of explaining it Carol. The first time I did it I was so confused!!! I had to ask the mod a few times what she meant. Once you get it, it is very easy but hard to explain via the computer.

message 46: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Ok, new folder coming up and then everyone can set up their separate threads for tracking purposes. I will move this and mark it so it remains at the top of the folder.

message 47: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments It is fun!!! That is why I really wanted to set it up here :) Thanks Lori and Karen (the creator :)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) OK - I found the errors. EUREKA!!!! Our lists now match. Just one thing, though, you included the read shelf, which I thought was the same as the currently-reading and to-read shelf in that it was exempt. It wasn't there the last time.

Anyway -let me know if you want to replace it and what with.
FYI - I am leaving for the rest of the day, but--
For those of you who would like a copy of the tracking spreadsheet, send a request e-mail to lsm.meadows@gmail.com and I will send a copy back to you tomorrow or so. That way we won't gum up this thread.

message 49: by Bucket (new)

Bucket | 44 comments I have a quick question! Pride and Prejudice (our example) is on 4,566-ish shelves. What is the fastest way to determine how many of those match our selected 350? Is there a fast way?

Thanks!

message 50: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Bucket, you would ONLY use the first 5 pages of these shelves.
