Shelf-A-Thon Challenge
Angela, looks good. I have never participated in this challenge before, so I will certainly have questions for you :)
One quick thing: the links you have in the post are not working. Can you recheck them? On the first link, I can click on ALL SHELVES, and see the hyperlinks to each one, but I think you were trying to link us to P&P, yeah?
So I guess my first question is:
I can only use ONE book found within the first 5 pages of any SHELF... is that it?

So that is 15 shelves for just page 1. I would continue to page 5. If you read a different book and touch 'novels' again you would not count it again. Once it has been touched you are done. You also just ignore the other shelves that are not listed here. So for example, on page one of Pride and Prej. they also have jane-austen and 1001 books, but these are not options.

Count me in on the shelf-a-thon. I, like you LOVE this challenge and think it can be done while doing many other challenges. I only wish I had joined this group early enough to work on the summer challenge.

I´ll try to join the challenge lol I´ll do my spreadsheet today if I have time
OK, well, if people are going to get rolling on this, I can start a new folder just for this challenge. This way everyone can create thier own personal thread to track their stuff. Or would you rather run it all on this one thread?

Create a separate folder or else this thread will be ungodly long.

Ha.. I´m going to do a 2009 version of this challenge... than I added ONE book and I did 76 shelves with it haha it´s funny... the second book will do 3, I know it will :(

Are we suppose to get credit for the whole book we read? We pick from different shelves for each book right? Am I making any sense with my questions?

Lyn be careful looking at the new popular shelves because they may have changed from last night.

I have absolutely NO IDEA what you are talking about...and this sounds fun, damnit...

I´ll use the Pride and Prejudice example too.
Let´s say you read the book and want to use it in this challenge... you´ll go to the books popular shelves, it is in the right of tha page, like Angela said, you will clikc "more popular shelves" and you will end up with this screen: http://www.goodreads.com/book/shelves...
Now you can see, in the end of the page, there are more than 228 popular shelves for this book. But for this challenge only the first 5 pages counts.
So you´ll go on checking all the shelves the book is, in this example : classics, fiction, favorites, classic, own etc.
I think it´s easy to print the shelves list like Angela does (The Shelves List is this one in the topic.. the 350 ones lol).
Then, when your list is ready you´ll go check them out. With Pride and Prejudice you´ll be able to check the shelves classic, fiction, favorites, classics... and any other shelf appears until the page 5 of the popular ones.
The thing is, you can only use the shelves in The List, so the shelf jane-austen will be useless.
When you read another book, you´ll do the same process, but now it´s just ignore the shelves you´ve already checked and try to find the other ones, cause the point is to check the 350.
Ie, with only ONE book, checked 76 shelfs... it was a pretty popular book. So now, the second book I´ll do I´ll ignore all the shelves I already checked... which let´s me with 274 shelves to check.
I hope you guys get it, I really hope >.< I can´t explian it in any other way LOL

Ok, new folder coming up and then everyone can set up their separate threads for tracking purposes. I will move this and mark it so it remains at the top of the folder.

Anyway -let me know if you want to replace it and what with.
FYI - I am leaving for the rest of the day, but--
For those of you who would like a copy of the tracking spreadsheet, send a request e-mail to lsm.meadows@gmail.com and I will send a copy back to you tomorrow or so. That way we won't gum up this thread.

Thanks!
Books mentioned in this topic
Harold and the Purple Crayon (other topics)The Erotic Word: Sexuality, Spirituality, and the Bible (other topics)
The Abstinence Teacher (other topics)
I have both Lori (Super Mod) and Karen (the person who created this challenge in her own group) to post this challenge here. It is a lot of fun to see how many shelves you can 'touch'.
Object of the Game: To have read off the most shelves from the official list below.
Start: August 1, 2009 You can start the book on July 31st but you cannot be finished with it until August 1st or after.
End: October 31, 2009
1. To have read a book off a shelf, you must read a book that is found on that particular shelf. ie. to have read book off the classics shelf, you must read a book that is found on "classics" shelf. For example, Pride & Prejudice is on the top of this shelf:my link text
2. A single book may be found on several shelves however we will only count the 1st page of top shelves for this book. For example, you may find Pride & Prejudice are found on the following shelves:my link text ... however we will only count the first page of listed shelves for this challenge (note: this is to make it easier for everybody as P&P is found on 70 pages of shelves!)
3. You don’t have to read off the shelves in any particular order of shelves.
4. The name of shelves must MATCH EXACTLY to the shelf you are trying to count. No deviations are acceptable (check the spelling off the official list below). For example one shelf reads: 2008-books and another 2008-book or childrens or children-s.
5. It is permissible to read a book that is found on a shelf you've already counted; just ignore those when you are tracking them.
6. Reporting
a. All we want you to report on the thread is the number of books you've read and the number of shelves these books are found on. Do not report titles because that will give your competitors a strategic edge; however
For example:
52 shelves
2 books
b. You must track the titles read and the shelves on your own. You can come up with your own method of tracking. I personally print the list and highlight the shelves I have hit, but others had made a excel spreadsheet.
8. Winning
The winner is one who has either read off all 350 shelves noted on the official list or who has read the most off these 350 shelves by the end date, midnight October 31 2009.
So please post your interest in participating in this challenge here
Thanks!!
