KL Caley Hi Guys,

Opinions wanted. I am looking into writers that have written a non-fiction book about fiction writing.

Although there are quite a lot of books out there about the writing process, tips, tricks etc, the authors of these books don't seem to be particularly well-known/have many of their own fictional works published. I am particularly interested (if anything exists) in the historical fiction genre (I guess an equivalent to Stephen Kings On Writing). I love this genre but I'm struggling to find authors that both write it and write about the writing process.

Can anyone recommend any works/authors such as this?

Thanks KL <3

Karen If you like Stephen King, perhaps you would like How to Write Best Selling Fiction by Dean Koontz? Now he has sold a ton of books!!!

Lizze Delgado I want to suggest one that was used as the textbook for a fiction writing class I had (college level). It's called Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft, by Janet Burroway. It's well organised and easy to understand, yet it's also quite specific and helpful! The end of each chapter contains three short stories that illustrate the main point made in each chapter. It's good stuff.

There's also The Norton Anthology of Short Fiction. Full of short stories from some of the best authors ever, with sections on writing and craft throughout. It's a book that makes you think, and also learn by example.

Eva King I really enjoyed This Year You Write Your Novel by Walter Mosley

Luanne Turnage By far, in my opinion, the best book after King's, of course, is "The Practice of Creative Writing" by Heather Sellers. What this book does is give you a starting point to writing fiction in a way that makes sense. It's broken down by areas to grow on and includes examples and supplies exercise areas. I've read tons of how to fiction books. I cannot stress how very helpful this book is in pointing out what works and why it works. Simple, yet out of all the books my school supplied, this is the only one I have ever recommended.

What is it about this book you liked? I'm always looking for new books to recommend on my blog. I'd love to know why if you want to share? Thanks

There's a few reasons. For one, the size is perfect for my handbag. I found that a lot of writing books are heavy and full of...fluff.
This is concise, well written and it give you the impression that it is possible for someone who isn't college educated, to write a book.

I wrote a book, soon to be published, entitled The Novel - A Writer's Guide - Discover the Joy of Writing Fiction. I've written 12 novels to date, so a lot of my own experiences are in it. If you would like to beta read it, please let me know.
