Sara Hmm...getting out of the YA just barely. Any great main characters that are in their 20s?

I’ve read so many historical romances with characters in their 20s!!! But of course I can’t think of any now. (But many Regency romances will have heroines in their 20s - it’s always a fake big deal that’s she’s a spinster, yadda yadda yadda ...)

Oh! That brings to mind The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery. The main character, Valancy, is 29 and a spinster treated very poorly by her family. She gets a medical diagnosis that urges her to live it up! It's a wonderful book!

Lisa | 56 comments I’m thinking The Secret History for this but to anyone who has read this are they 18/19 year olds or in their 20’s?

message 6: by Mairéad (new)

Mairéad | 11 comments Anne of Green Gables Series? Anne turns 20 in the third book, I think? The books can work for a lot of prompts if you want something to cover prompts

This was my first thought too because I’m doing a re read of series but I’m on Anne of Ingleside and I think she would be in her 30’s by that time

message 8: by Anabell (new)

Anabell | 355 comments I know Anne Elliot is around 27 in Persuasion
I think I might end up with a historical romance here...

message 15: by Anabell (new)

Anabell | 355 comments Does anyone know if A Court of Thorns and Roses would qualify for this prompt?

message 16: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 109 comments Crazy Rich Asians: Rachel is 29 at the start of the first book ("Being twenty-nine, she was by Chinese standards well into old maid territory").
Lots of Sophie Kinsella's main characters would fit into this category: Fixie Farr in I Owe You One, Becky Bloomwood in Confessions of a Shopaholic is in her mid-twenties, Lara in Twenties Girl, Emma in Can You Keep a Secret?, Katie in My Not So Perfect Life.

message 17: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 109 comments The House of Mirth: Lily Bart is 29 at the start.
According to Wikipedia, the age of P.G. Wodehouse's Bertie Wooster is between 24 and 29 during the course of the stories.
In Adrian Mole: The Wilderness Years, Adrian is 23 3/4 years of age.

message 18: by Chrissi (new)

Chrissi (clewand84) | 238 comments The Two Lives of Lydia Bird is about a woman at 28.

message 19: by Therese (new)

Therese | 133 comments Me before You by JoJo Moyes, and the other ones in this series would fit.

message 20: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 160 comments Go Set a Watchman (the sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird) is about the lawyers daughter. She is 26.

message 21: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1301 comments @Anabell, I don't think we know her age (there might be a mention of it right in the beginning) but I have a feeling she is a bit younger. Maybe someone else has a better memory than I do.

I just started Moon of the Crusted Snow and the protagonist is 24! I thought about saving it for 2020, but it seems pretty good, and I’m sure I can find something else later ;-)

Sara Anabell wrote: "Does anyone know if A Court of Thorns and Roses would qualify for this prompt?"

I think so. I'd have to go back and check, but I feel like Feyre is only 19 or maybe 20 when the book opens.

Okay. Thanks for your answers. I'll take the chance and if it doesn't fit then I'll just use it for some other prompt. If no one get there first I will come back later with the answer :-)

Jill Holmberg (travelingtalesofadreamer) | 3 comments Anabell wrote: "Does anyone know if A Court of Thorns and Roses would qualify for this prompt?"

By the end of the series I thought the main character was in her 20s... can't remember where I read that though

message 26: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1301 comments I just remembered that fandom wikis usually deliver with this sort of question. It says she is 19 in the first book, 20 in the second, 21 in the third. So you fit the first book in another category you are ready to read the series :) Just checked: she was in 20's when the first book was published. https://acourtofthornsandroses.fandom...

message 27: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1301 comments I mean Sarah J Maas was in her 20's when acotar was published it was a bit unclear.

Thanks for checking!! : )

Thank you, I was wondering about Persuasion! It's the only one of the main six Jane Austens not on my list, and considering I manage to shoehorn in a reread of Pride and Prejudice at least once every couple of years, you'd think I'd have managed to read the rest!

message 36: by Udari (last edited Nov 26, 2019 03:17PM) (new)

Udari | 38 comments Elena Deveraux is 28 (if I remember correctly) in Angels' Blood

Oh! Do you know how old Rue is in Prudence? I have been wanting to start that series.

message 38: by Karin (last edited Nov 28, 2019 12:54PM) (new)

Karin Can You Forgive Her? counts--the central woman--Alice Vavasor-- is 24. Other main characters in this are also in their twenties, but she is the main one we are to forgive.

Also, the next book in the series, Phineas Finn is about Phineas when he is in his twenties.

Also, the vast majority of the women in Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers Who Helped Win World War II were in their twenties, including some of the ones featured the most.

message 39: by Karin (new)

Karin I just remembered The Summer Before the War. We know that most of main characters are in their twenties because the mother of one of them is 45.

message 40: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 21 comments Lisa wrote: "I’m thinking The Secret History for this but to anyone who has read this are they 18/19 year olds or in their 20’s?"

The Chapter Conundrum (Stacey) | 404 comments Anabell wrote: "Does anyone know if A Court of Thorns and Roses would qualify for this prompt?"

I just finished ACOTAR and can confirm that Feyre is only 19 in the first book BUT you could use book #1 for over 20 letters in the title or vision enhancement/impairment (Lucien! and arguably Rhysand as well) and use Mist & Fury for this prompt!! There's mention of Feyre's birthday towards the beginning of ACOMAF =)

message 43: by Juniper (new)

Juniper (jooniperd) Anabell wrote: "I know Anne Elliot is around 27 in Persuasion..."

yes - it's stated in the novel she's exactly 27 while the story is unfolding.

message 44: by Rosanna (new)

Rosanna (rosannante) | 6 comments If the sequel to Ninth House doesn't come out in 2020 I'm thinking Conversations with Friends for this prompt. I loved Normal People so maybe I would enjoy this one too!

message 45: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sezziy) | 901 comments Does anyone know how old Lyra is in The Secret Commonwealth? The blurb says it's set twenty years after La Belle Sauvage which would make her twenty but it also says seven years after Northern Lights which would make her nineteen.

Marie-Eve Mailhot (indieegirll) | 139 comments I just finished What Happens in New York and the sequel What Happens in London.

Cute stories, all characters are in their 20s.

What Happens In New York

I might read the third one in the series for this prompt.

message 49: by Laura (new)

Laura Miles | 244 comments For anyone looking for nonfiction (specifically, true crime), I'm reading The Feather Thief and the main events of the crime take place when the culprit is in his 20s. There's some background description of early life, as well as historical context, but it's primarily centered on events in his 20s.
