Julie | 606 comments This is really awesome - I really enjoyed the varying challenges this year so I'm going to give this a go again next year.

I plan on doing all challenges but #2 ;-)

Julie | 606 comments Challenge #1 - Old & New Classics Challenge
01/01/21 - 07/06/21

Aside from Bingo this is probably one of my favourite challenges each year. The idea of setting a goal of exactly which books to read and then sticking to it really appeals to me.

2. David Balfour by Robert Louis Stevenson (1893) Read January 2021

8. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo (2015) Read February-March 2021
9. Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman (2017) Read May 2021
10. In Our Time by Ernest Hemingway (1924) Read March 2021

12. 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke (1968) Read February 2021

Alternates

A-2. Despair by Vladimir Nabokov (1934) Read April 2021

Julie | 606 comments Challenge #3 - Second place or worse
01/01/21 - 27/09/21

I love the idea of this challenge. I often vote for books that do not win. For this challenge I decided the that it would have to be a female author and if possible also 'non-white'.
As Bob suggested I've chosen for each category. Also, since it may be possible that some of these books actually win a pole before the end of 2021, I've included an alternate choice for each category (except Long Read).

New School
1. Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich (Dec. 2020, no. 5) Read June 2021
2. Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende (Oct. 2020 no. 3) Read April 2021

Old School
3. Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen by Liliuokalani (Dec. 2020, no. 5) Read January 2021
4. A Long Fatal Love Chase by Louisa May Alcott (Jan. 2021 no. ?) Read June 2021
5. Sonnets from the Portuguese by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (Oct. 2020 no. 5) Read September 2021

Short Story/Novella
6. The Hour of the Star by Clarice Lispector (Nov. 2020 no. 5) Read January 2021

Long Read
7. Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand (2019 First Quarter, no. 2) Read April 2021

Time to go 'hunting' in the old group polls for ideas for challenge #3

message 12: by Luke (new)

Luke (korrick) Nice to see your twist on Challenge #3, Julie. I find it's those extra little efforts that make challenges like these really rewarding.

message 13: by Brina (new)

Brina You have the best ideas , Julie. Your three new school books are some of my favorites ever, well at least the authors are some of all time favorites. I hope you enjoy these. I keep meaning to read Hawaii’s Story, I think you have given me the push to.

Yes, very nice. I have thought about reading Winston Churchill before. I think that would be interesting. Good luck with your challenges.

Julie | 606 comments On this last day of the year I'm really excited to start these challenges. I've set them all up in my bullet journal to help me keep the focus on these and the Bingo Challenge

I love that you have turned your century challenge into a Pulitzer challenge as well. I really should do that and help myself with progress on the Pulitzers. Happy reading, Julie.

message 19: by Julie (new)

Julie | 606 comments Updated my challenges. They are really well under way. The best books so far have been Ender's Game and Professor Hieronimus. Two very different books but says a lot about my ecclectic taste.

message 20: by Sue (new)

Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 3694 comments You are flying through these challenges Julie. I'm not big on Sci-fi but love certain ones and everyone seems to love Ender's Game so I hope to get to it.

Your century Pulitzer challenge has 5 of my favorites on it. I think I have His Family on one of mine for this year.

You are moving along nicely. I agree Enders Game is a special book, quite unique.

message 22: by Julie (new)

Julie | 606 comments Well life came in the way of updating this regularly.
But updating today I can tell that I'm very well on the way to finishing my challenges by the end of the year. This is what I still have to do:

Titles: Q, V, X, Y (have 3 of 4 of these planned)
Authors: U, Y (have both of these planned)
One book to go for my pulitzer challenge (Ironweed)
One book to go for my nobel laureate challenge (Winston Churchill)
