This is the place where we will--hopefully--make a dent in those overflowing TBR piles and shelves. Books you already own (sometimes for years!) will count towards this challenge. The goal is to finally get to some books you meant to read, before all those new ones started piling on top of them.

You can sign up for the challenge here: https://www.goodreads.com/challenges/...

Good luck cutting down those piles!

inciminci | 650 comments I will join this challenge for the first time this year, my spot is here. I really wish to read all my physical books populating my shelves at home, so I made a separate tbr shelf for that and want to tackle that here! Good luck everyone!
My books:

Netanella | 572 comments Kimberly, is there an age-limit for the books? For example, they need to have been purchased in 2021 or earlier?

Netanella wrote: "Kimberly, is there an age-limit for the books? For example, they need to have been purchased in 2021 or earlier?"

The purpose of this is to cut down on the books you already own, not new ones purchased. Whatever the date, if it's been sitting around, unread ( I usually go for at least a year, but that's just me) works. It's not a competition, just a personal challenge to help get to some of those books you "forget" you have. :)

message 5: by Char (last edited Mar 20, 2023 10:08AM) (new)

Char | 17457 comments I usually choose books that have been sitting for over a year as well.
I'm in and I'm challeging myself to read at least 20. (Even at only 20 I usually fail this challenge every damn year!)

I just made a new shelf for this challenge and added the 17 books from this year's failed challenge, so I get to choose 3 more:

1. The Ceremonies by T.E.D. Klein (Feb-March)
2. The Uninvited by Dorothy MaCardle

Marie | 4028 comments Way to go you all for getting the new thread up for 2023! 😊

My spot is here. Setting my goal low. Only 7 for me.

I am making this a challenge within a challenge. :) Will list them out as I read them with a read date. I literally have over 5000+ books stuck in the cloud so I should be able to find something to complete this challenge. lol

7/7

Books I have owned seven years:

1) Ghost Town - read - 1/21/2023 - 5 stars.
2) Child's Play - read - 4/22/2023 - 5 stars.

Books I have owned six years:

1) Hollow House - read - 2/2/23 - 1 star.
2) In the Murder House - read 4/14/23 - 5 stars

Books I have owned five years:

1) The School of Revenge - read 4/12/23 - 4 stars

Books I have owned four years:

1) Witching Hour Theatre - read 4/12/23 - 4 stars
2) Pine Lakes - read 5/14/23 - 4 stars

message 9: by Kim (new)

Kim I've challenged myself to knock out 1 a month. Surely I can to that, right?

message 10: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 572 comments Thanks for the quick reply, guys! I think I'm going to go for books that I've acquired in 2021 or prior.

Theresa (mysteries.and.mayhem) (mysteriesandmayhem) | 359 comments Kim wrote: "I've challenged myself to knock out 1 a month. Surely I can to that, right?"

That's my hope too, Kim. One TBR that I already own a month. We got this! :)

message 12: by inciminci (new)

inciminci | 650 comments Kim wrote: "I've challenged myself to knock out 1 a month. Surely I can to that, right?"

That's good thinking, Kim, not too much, but you can still see some progress. I was thinking of something between 15 and 20, but maybe I'll start with 12 too.

Theresa (mysteries.and.mayhem) (mysteriesandmayhem) | 359 comments I ended up making my a baker's dozen - 13! :) And we'll see if I can top that.

message 14: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 572 comments I think we could all meet our challenge for this if authors just stopped writing incredible books for a bit!

I'll stick with one a month as well. :)

Marie | 4028 comments My problem with reading older books like a year or more old is that I end up reading newer stuff that has come out. lol Going to really try and dig deep next year and read stuff that has been on my kindle for at least five years as I do have tons of books that have been stuck in the Amazon cloud for that long. Actually I am going to do a challenge within this challenge on here up there in my spot to make myself read the older kindle books. :)

Exactly Marie, me too. I took a look at the most anticipated horror for 2023 and saw the new Catriona Ward, Victor Lavalle and a ton of new authors and I started drooling all over my tbr-list, I can't control myself.
That's why I ended up here, I want to tidy up a little but I'm starting with my physical shelf. There are still the invisible tbr's on my kindle and on my kobo but those are a whole different thing. I feel so dirty writing all this 😅

Totally 100% agree! It is like I block out what I already own and just want to read the new stuff! lol Then at the end of the year I am like - where did the time go - I never did get to those books that have been locked up for years on my kindle! lol

Blow the dust off the physical books and have fun! lol :) More reading power to you, Inciminci! :)

True confession time. The oldest unread book on my Kindle is Fear and Trembling by Soren Kierkegaard, which I downloaded in 2012. That's some deep reading that it's taken me nearly 11 years to undertake. Maybe this is my year?? 😂

Maybe it is, Theresa! :)

The oldest for me is 2016 on kindle - it is looking like I have around 216 books that I haven't read from that year. I don't even want to look at 2017 - probably near 500 there. lol

Squire (srboone) | 1043 comments After scaling some of the heights of my TBR every year, I find that I am nowhere near the top. Like most people, the TBR summit keeps getting higher and further away no matter how many books I check off. Some of my 2023 personal challenges will be:

Stephen King challenge (catching up on the King books I haven't read):

If It Bleeds by Stephen King
The Outsider by Stephen King
The Institute by Stephen King
Billy Summers by Stephen King
Elevation by Stephen King
Later by Stephen King

Miscellaneous horror:
The Best of Cemetery Dance II by various

Series I want to get read: Kane, The Mystic Warrior

Bloodstone by Karl Edward Wagner
Night Winds by Karl Edward Wagner
Darkness Weaves by Karl Edward Wagner
Dark Crusade by Karl Edward Wagner
Death Angel's Shadow by Karl Edward Wagner

Goodreads Authors (don't know how many):

Heraclix & Pomp by Forrest Aguirre

And my annual doorstop challenge (1000 pages; at least 3, shooting for 5):

Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace
Centennial by James A. Michener
The Gormenghast Novels by Mervyn Peake

Lindsay (heavyefinmetal) | 72 comments Count me into the squirrel boat as well 😂 I always have good intentions, and then new books and group reads distract me. In 2022 I set out for 10 and only did 3 (yikes). So this next year I'm trying to be reasonable at 5. I put them up on paperbackswap when I'm done so I'm going to hope the de-cluttering is a motivator this year.
