Bry (utqtbry) Raven's Shadow (Raven Set, #1) by Patricia Briggs

Book description: Seraph is a Raven mage who left behind her responsibilities for the love of the ex-soldier Tier. But when Tier disappears, Seraph must use her magic-and fulfill her ancestors' oath to protect humanity from destruction.

new_user This series got really twisty and I didn't end up liking it as much as some of her others. Second book was better at least.

message 3: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. This book took me a while to get into. I really wasn't crazy about Seraph and wasn't sure she really loved Tier until much later in the book. I still haven't read #2 yet.

message 4: by new_user (new)

new_user I think she skipped the years when Seraph and Tier are cementing their relationship, didn't she? That's probably why we aren't convinecd of them as a couple.

I don't want to give anything away, but I'm not a fan of reincarnation, so I didn't like these as much.

I'm glad I found this book at the ubs not so long ago. I just need to find the sequel.

message 6: by Bry (new)

Bry (utqtbry) We are going to start reading this come June 1st as a group reads if anyone is interested in joining in! :D

message 7: by Bry (new)

Bry (utqtbry) I started reading this last night and have finished Part 1. I love Tier's character. Such an amazing gentleman. Gotta love Briggs writing. It is just so smooth and wonderful!

message 8: by new_user (new)

new_user I love Tier too. It's too bad she skipped right past the interesting getting-to-know-you part, LOL.

message 9: by Bry (new)

Bry (utqtbry) Yeah I started part 2 and was WTF? 20 years just past in 2 pages! I was looking forward to their getting to know one another too. :(

message 10: by new_user (new)

new_user LOL. I had the same reaction. This is why I said read one of the other series! xD That, and there's something else farther along that's a little annoying.

message 11: by Bry (new)

Bry (utqtbry) Booo...I am at the part where the 2nd Traveler girl has shown up. At least the pace is picking up a bit. Love Brggg's writing but it got really slow for a bit.

I know what you girls mean. Jes is interesting, so far. I'm curious to see where things go from here.

message 13: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. This book is the one I least like of Patricia Briggs' so far. And I didn't really care for Seraph. She was okay, but there was just something about her. I loved her husband Tier though and agree I wish there was more of him in the book.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 574 comments Mod
Could it be her withdrawn, almost dispassionate personality, Carolyn? I think that's part of her keeping her anger in check b/c of the danger of her magic. I did pick that up about her, so far.

message 15: by Bry (new)

Bry (utqtbry) Thats a good point Dani. She always has a very distant attitude and cool demeanor that I think is a result of trying to stay calm and not let loose her magic.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 574 comments Mod
I liked the scene where she went postal on her soon to be sister-in-law. :)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 574 comments Mod
I'm really liking Jes. He has a dangerous vibe. But, he's kind of sweet. I picture the guy who plays Merlin on the Merlin show.

message 18: by new_user (new)

new_user Jes is the most interesting one and he probably plays the most integral role in book two, kind of steals the show (which I was thankful for, LOL.)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 574 comments Mod
That's good news, b/c I like him.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 574 comments Mod
I finished Raven Shadow. I reallly like it, although some parts were a little slow. I loved Seraph and
Tier, and their kids. There was much in this story that shows why PB is one of my favorite authors.

message 21: by Bry (new)

Bry (utqtbry) I still have about 60 pages to go. It was extremely slow in the middle but it has been picking up a lot towards the end. I think I love that everyone was involved in the rescue. There was no 1 hero, and everyone played a part!

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 574 comments Mod
I loved that about it too, Bry.

message 23: by Bry (new)

Bry (utqtbry) I have finished it and overall really liked it despite the slowness. It took me a long time to like Seraph but I adored everyone else, especially Tier, Jes, and Lehr! Seraph was just so cold. It seemed to take forever for her to be able to control her magic while showing her feelings at the same time.

The whole family setting out to save their father was great, since everyone seemed to play a pretty pivitol role. Hope the second book is just as good!

message 24: by Nita (new)

Nita (gillnit) I am about 1/3 of the way through this book and really enjoying it so far. I agree, it would have been nice to see more of Tier and Seraph's life during those 20 years. But so far I like each of the children and am very much intrigued by Jes and his powers.

message 25: by Nita (new)

Nita (gillnit) I finished up this book yesterday. I really liked it. Briggs is just at great at writing fantasy as urban fantasy. I think the book had a nice balance of world building and character development. I do not like it when authors drown you in information about the world they have created and how it works. I like it when they introduce you to the world gradually through the plot. I think Briggs did that wonderfully.

My favorite characters were Jes and Tier. Both of their "powers" were very intriguing. I wouldn't mind having Tier's powers. I didn't mind Seraph's coldness; I could understand her emotional detachment because of her magic and because the way everybody but her family treated her.

Can't wait to read the next book!

I felt almost exactly the same way about this book, Nita. Glad you liked it.

message 27: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) | 91 comments I have to say I agree about not being convinced Seraph loved Tier. My favorite characters were Jes and Lahr. Tier was number 3 on my list. I loved watching Jes and Lahr come into their powers. I wish Seraph would have been upfront with her kids about their powers.

message 28: by Bry (new)

Bry (utqtbry) I thought she did love him, it just frustrated me to no end that she couldn't express it or at least hint at it.

message 29: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) | 91 comments You realize later that she does but I kind of thought she was just content in her life because she didn't want to live the life of a Raven cause she was afraid.

I think that you don't really get to evaluate what Seraph feels while she's younger. I think she was attracted/drawn to Tier, but also afraid of her power and her duty as a Raven. As an adult, I believe that her actions show her love, even if her words do not. People are so different, expressing themselves in various ways. Some people aren't good with words, but their actions show their heart. I would suggest Adam as an example (at least in the earlier books). Although Adam isn't all gushy with Mercy, I never doubt his love for Mercy. Seraph is not too dissimilar. I think the issue is we expect woman to be more emotional and feeling. It's hard to see a woman who's more like a man in how she acts emotionally (or so traditional roles would suggest). But, I know people like Seraph, and I am a bit like her in that I am not one for emotional outbursts. I like to be self-controlled. I think my family knows how much I love them, because I show it. So, I guess that's what I see in Seraph.

message 31: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) | 91 comments I think it's the fact that you don't get to see them after they get married until he comes up missing. So you really don't get to see how she acts until later in their relationship.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 574 comments Mod
That's a good point, Jen.

message 33: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) | 91 comments I just wish we could have seen more of the falling in love. I don't think they were in love when they got married they were just on their way there. I think no one doubted that Tier was in love because of everything he did to keep her safe.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 574 comments Mod
I don't think she was trying to write a romance, so I guess she didn't feel the need to focus on that part.

message 35: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) | 91 comments I think it would have made Seraph more likable. Less cold

message 36: by Bry (new)

Bry (utqtbry) I think y'all are both right. Since it wasn't a romance Briggs I guess didn't feel the need to elaborate on it, but it would have been extremely helpful in terms of me liking Seraph if I could have seen her in more normal day to day actions throughout their life together.

message 37: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) | 91 comments I agree that she probable didn't feel the need to do that since it is not a romance but that doesn't stop me from wanting to see it....I know I sound like a spoiled little brat

message 38: by Bry (new)

Bry (utqtbry) Oh I totally wanted to see it too!!!

message 39: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) | 91 comments Bry I'm glad I'm not alone

message 40: by Bry (last edited Jun 21, 2010 11:28AM) (new)

Bry (utqtbry) Nope nope! At least we are getting to see the romance in the Mercy and A&O series!

message 41: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) | 91 comments I love the romance in the Mercy and the A&O series!!!! I love Paranormal and romance combined books. I'm not a huge fan of just romance books. But with the Paranormal books the romance doesn't seem to take away from the story.

message 42: by Bry (new)

Bry (utqtbry) I feel the same way Jen. I have only read a few romance but they have all been historical. Otherwise they are all paranormal.

message 43: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) | 91 comments I don't mind the historical romance either...but the just Romance is well...boring if you ask me

message 44: by Bry (new)

Bry (utqtbry) same here. I have tried some contemporaries but mostly have to make myself finish them.

message 45: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 110 comments I know I am late, I am going to read this next month (I have owned it for awhile, just getting around to it), so I look forward to adding comments. I am actually relieved that romance isn't the focus (or so it appears from comments ...)
