Diane | 13052 comments "Circumnavigators" are either previous challenge participants who are interested in continuing on to the rest of the world, those people who have been on their own personal world reading challenge and would like to log their progress here, or people who just plain don't like deadlines or limits. Here you will be able to add onto the countries you have already "visited" and continue forward with your country and/or state count from previous years. There are no time limits, just read at your own pace.

If you are also participating in this year's annual challenge, any previously unread destinations can be added to both lists. If you read a book from a country you read in the previous year, it will only count toward the current 80 country annual list. (Example: Say the first two books I read are from France and Pakistan. This will be my first book read from Pakistan during either challenge, so I will be able to count it in my current annual list AND my continuation of the list from last year. France, however, is a country of which I read in the 2009/2010 annual list already, so now I will only be able to claim it in my current annual list. It sounds a lot more confusing than it actually is.) You may participate in both challenges simultaneously, but will have to start a thread under each topic.

Books may be of any length and rules for settings are the same as on the Around the World in 80 days annual challenge. Adjust the rules as you see fit..

Dee (austhokie) | 438 comments i'm in!! lol!!

i'm going to keep my frequent flyer status and throw in globetrotter as an additional goal - not going to try for the states this year

message 3: by Lahni (new)

Lahni | 17 comments So I can just copy and pase my records from this year here and continue on? Great!!

message 4: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 438 comments that's what i think...I asumme we start our own threads like we did last year

message 5: by Diane , Armchair Tour Guide (new)

Diane | 13052 comments You can just keep adding on to your current list. =)

message 6: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 438 comments sounds good - i'm gong to move my posts over here as well...when i get a chance - i still have like 5 more countries to hit before the end of the month

Arda (arda_nl) | 37 comments I'm joining in here as well! I started my own personal challenge of reading a book from every country in the world on a trekker journey (but couldn't continue..). I would like to finish that journey...

message 8: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 933 comments I am planning to do both the Around the World challenge as a Frequent Flyer again as well as the 50 states challenge. I didn't get the Around the World one completed this year, but I did complete the 50 states one, so I am ready to get started all over again traveling around the world!

message 9: by SandyC (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 100 comments I'm in! I will continue the challenge I started last year as a Frequent Flyer.

message 10: by Angela (new)

Angela | 5 comments I'm in. I am new to the group an just started my trek.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

I'd like to be a circumnavigator and keep reading books from countries I haven't visited yet. I was also trying to do the 50 States challenge last year (2010-2011) so I will continue with that as well. I can't manage to read 130 books in a year. That's a lot. So I'll just continue to participate in the challenge and add to the countries and states I've already "visited."

message 12: by Coqueline (new)

Coqueline | 13 comments I don't think I can ever read 80 books in any single year, so I guess this group is a more logical challenge for me to follow.

That's okay, few people do. You can read as many or as few as you like.

Cheryl Hager (cheryl_is_reading) How do I get started under the never-ending challenge? Nevermind, I figured it out!

message 17: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnareadstheworld) | 474 comments As I just recently joined this group and have missed out on the annual read since October, I'm going to start this ongoing challenge. Can I add countries that I've 'visited' on my own since October?

Yes. Have a wonderful world tour!

Shelly (shellye77) I'm going to start this Never-ending challenge. If you give me a deadline, I'll never make it! I'm also going to start with books I read from now on, no going back (I may change that rule, lol). Now to start planning!

Diane | 13052 comments Catherine,

To start your thread, follow this link:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

Click on "New Topic" on the right hand side.

Type your name or title in the topic box.

Put information on the books you read in the comment box.

Go to this same top and just keep adding your updates in a new comment box on the bottom of the page.

You can count any books you have read since October of last year.

Happy traveling!

Danielle (daniellecobbaertbe) | 68 comments Doing an 'around the world in 80 books challenge' for another group; so I suppose I can do this here as well. Great that I can add books I read since October last year. This means one extra book. And that I can do this in my own slow pace as well.

message 27: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catjackson) Thank you for this option. I've found that if I join a challenge that has a particular time-line I don't do very well. So, I'll just become a Circumnavigator and do this at my own pace, on my own calendar. Wonderful!

message 28: by Sam (last edited Oct 21, 2012 05:23AM) (new)

Sam (aramsamsam) I started a In 80 books around the world challenge of my own over a year ago. Is it okay to just start a circumnavigator thread here and paste all books I have read yet into it? That would be great.

I'd missed that we can revisit countries in this one. Gives me a couple books to add that I have read.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a better understanding. I like the words your own pace. Thanks for the helpful information.

SandyC (sandyc88) | 100 comments I would like to continue my Circumnavigator challenge, as well as participate in the 2013 Lite annual version. Should I use the same thread for both, or create a new thread for the 2013 Lite challenge?

I would prefer you had a thread for each, unless you have a way of clearly separating them on one thread.

message 34: by SandyC (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 100 comments That would be my preference too. Thanks!

message 35: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 933 comments I am planning to continue my Circumnavigator challenge, as well as starting a new Frequent Flyer one as well. I will also keep track of where I have been for the Tourist and Rogue Traveler challenges, just so I can see how fast I can accomplish the Tourist one and how many books I have read set in places outside my home country, for the Rogue Traveler one. I will create threads for all of them so it doesn't get confusing.

I am excited to be starting a new Around-the-World year!

message 36: by Jenclone (new)

Jenclone | 78 comments I love all of these options. Keeping multiple lists going is almost as much fun as reading multiple books. Diane, you're the perfect moderator, imho.
I've been absent for the second half of this year and never got very far on my frequent flier mental miles, so now I can
1. start a Circumnavigator Challenge for the countries I've done already
2. start a new FF Challenge for 2013
3. be a rogue traveller and list everyplace and everybook
.........all at once! This is gonna be great.

I'm a little confused with all the different names like Trekker, circumnavigator, etc.

message 43: by Diane , Armchair Tour Guide (last edited Jan 06, 2013 01:47PM) (new)

Diane | 13052 comments Hattie wrote: "I'm a little confused with all the different names like Trekker, circumnavigator, etc."

Hattie, here is a brief explanation of the different tracks:

Frequent flyer - goal is to work toward reading 80 countries in one year, in any order.
Trekker - goal is to work toward reading 80 countries in one year, in geographical order (countries read must connect or be near each other).
Circumnavigator - goal is to work toward 80 or more countries with no time limits.
Tourist - goal is to work toward 24 countries in one year, in any order
Rogue Traveler - read as many books as you want set anywhere in the world in one year, all books can even be in same country.

Hope this helps.

I am thrilled to be able to keep my lists here! I have other challenges too, so I am happy to not have a deadline.
