Talking to the Dead Halloween Ritual

Halloween – dress up - dress down to the bone, it’s all for amusement, right?

Not if you follow some ancient beliefs about this special celebration. In ancient times Halloween (Holy Eve or All Hallows) and the days following November 1st - All Saints’ Day - November 2nd - All Soul’s Day or Day of the Dead, were more than fun; it was a sacred time of the year for people such as the Celts to honor their elderly, ancestors and dead. Festivities and rituals of these three days can be found in Celtic paganism history and later Catholicism holydays combined pagan beliefs with saints. In the Celtic pagan tradition it was thought that the veils between the two worlds - the living and dead - thinned so that spirits of the dead could float through or walk the earth to visit their living relatives. Then they crossed back over to the “underworld”.

During the spirits’ visit spooky things happened, as you can imagine. The living would dress-up in hopes that some spirits wouldn’t recognize and haunt them. But if they wanted the spirits to visit they would invite them with a similar ritual below.

To connect with the spirits of your loved ones to say hello and/or ask a question do this beautiful sacred ritual.

Gather: Pen (perhaps a favorite color) and paper
Flower – any kind
Photo of deceased
Incense – pleasant plus helps create a mood
Candles – white, black and orange – white – clear visions, black - spiritual unknown and orange for season and color of renewal
Burning vessel – ashtray or cauldron and matches
Glass or bowl of water – signifies the other world and also can douse any fire mishaps.
Sweet & beverage – Symbolic gesture for visiting spirit guests
Table or clothe on floor – to lay the above upon.
Chair - optional
Or you can do it simply by lighting a white candle, place it in a window along with a treats and add a chair for a spirit to sit and visit. Remember to snuff candle before leaving the room for the night.
For a few minutes quiet your self, then say, ‘Only good can enter herein.’ Perhaps add a prayer to the Divine to bring forth healing, loving energies to you and protect you from negative fearful thoughts and/or energies. After all it is Halloween and negative energies/entities can roam free along with your loved ones’ spirits.
Next - make a list of all of those who have passed, and how they affected your life. I write thanking my departed loved ones for all they gave me - love - support etc and to my ancestors for bestowing blessings upon me such as the abilities and talents that help me living fully.

You can fold the paper, keep it overnight and bury in earth or burn it while performing your ritual. As the paper burns it turns to smoke rising up and is symbolic for sending your thought to the mental psychic airwaves. Doing either is ‘mailing your message’.

Peer into the water, relax and connect to the psychic mind - perhaps an image will form or a memory will be recalled. After that, invite your spirits to visit by taking your white candle, sweets and beverage to a window so as they walk the earth they will see the light and recognize you (home.)

Stay as long as you like, thinking of your loved ones, talking to her and him. If you hear, think or sense a message was given, take note it for later examination. Or, after your ritual (remember to snuff the candles and incense), you might dream about the spirits, as this is an easier way for them to communicate.

Spirits often can’t get through to their loved ones because the grief is so strong. To your best ability, endeavor to be calm, upbeat and peaceful. You might get a message for another (relative or friend). If you do, share it.

Spirit communication is often stronger when conducted in a group - even two people - so perhaps a relative and/or friend might want to do this ritual with you to share in the experience.

Wishing you a merry frolicking good time and a cauldron full of blessings.

WINTER SOLSTICE THE LONG DARK NIGHT  THE R...

WINTER SOLSTICE THE LONG DARK NIGHT  THE RETURN OF THE SUN

Winter Solstice has been celebrated in cultures the world over for thousands of years. This start of the solar year is a celebration of the return of Light (the sun) and the rebirth of the Sun's power to foster life.

Ancient cultures built huge stone structures designed to align perfectly with the sun at specific times, such as dawn or high noon. And some ancient peoples performed sacred rituals and celebrated all night, and I'm sure for days.

How will you celebrate? I've been invited to a "ghost story" time in one of San Francisco's historical Victorian hotels. While there I agreed to be filmed with what spirits or ghosts from yesteryear I might pick up. There will be two other mediums. I'm the only one spending the night at the hotel. Hope to get some sleep between ghost visits.

It just seemed like a fun thing to do, sit around and tell stories. That's what our ancestors did during The Long Dark Nights of winter. Stories of their ancient ancestors, of dreams, and visions of tomorrow - spring time. They hoped for better times.

Sound familiar? Yes, we too hope for better times during the winter of our own lives. We wish others Happy New Year!

East to West ancestors celebrated this time of year. Iranian people celebrate the night of the Northern Hemisphere's winter solstice as Yada night. It's one the oldest Iranian traditions that has been present in Persian culture from the ancient years. The pagan Scandinavian and Germanic people of northern Europe celebrated a twelve-day "midwinter" (winter solstice) holiday called Yule (aka Jul, Julblot, from the Norse, Jul, meaning wheel.)
What about your culture? What rituals do you follow?
It's really no mystery or need to be any one religious belief why our ancestors celebrated winter solstice: It began with Nature

Winter: food became and still can be, scarce. Weather conditions plunge into low temperatures, heavy, cold rains; snow; winds -  illness comes easy with runny noses, scratchy throats, pneumonia, influenza and too often death of the old and very young.

Staying alive in a rugged terrain, lack of food, safe shelter, harsh weather - was and is a main concern. I think of "Naked and Afraid" television show.

Bringing joy during a hard time: Our ancestors had to have hope; they had to belief better times were on the way, just like we do. Thus we celebrate life with sharing laughter, gifts, foods, just being together. And, like us today, it begins with a focus, a purpose - rituals - why we're celebrating - thanking a Divine Source keeping us alive.

In olden times families and friends would travel often for miles to mingle and be together just as we do today. Gift giving when visiting the homes of others is a custom nearly all enjoy.

Sprucing up: Decorating trees surrounding homes, decorating inside the home became a festive custom. Red, for the energy of the sun, green for mother nature. Life!

How will you give to those in need? That is part of this sacred time's ritual and celebration. Share what you have - thus we have "gift giving."

With all that said, you understand why Winter Solstice is a most special event. It's about the birth of light, awaiting the birth of the sun.

A time to vision what is to come; dreams are vivid as the night's are longer and hope to make it to spring gives life to the mind, body and spirit.

Tonight, if you can, stay up to greet the sun.

Blessed be.

MAY DAY CELEBRATIONS!

MAY DAY PAGAN AND CATHOLIC CELEBRATION!

My favorite Catholic celebration ritual was the May Day celebration held in our parish church. The girls wore pretty dresses with wreaths of flowers on their heads and the boys spruced up too.

My coven celebrated by also dressed in our spring finery, being in nature dancing and singing around the Maypole, which was a tree and then envisioning our future wishes blooming as we celebrated the Spring Goddess and God of fertility - the Lady and the Lord - to keep the Earth fertile to provide us the wonderfully colorfully Summer fruits and vegetables.

One year, my young sister was chosen by her peers to crown a large statue of Mary, Our Lady. It was a real honor in the parish and to her family.

I loved this day so much that I wrote a whole chapter of it in my book, The Skye in June. Only, in my chapter all hell breaks loose after the church festivities.

Read an excerpt from the chapter, May Day Heavenly joy to Oh, Oh, What did she say?

I hope you enjoy it. Finished at my blog page MAY DAY PAGAN AND CATHOLIC CELEBRATION!

IMAGE CANDLES WITH HANDFASTING CEREMONY

Handfasting is an ancient Celtic tradition for "tying the knot" - wedding ceremony, As an officiant at weddings and as part of the handfasting I add image candles.
More Traditional White WedIt's a lovely tradition where different colored ribbons or cords are loosely tied around a couples hands as vows are exchanged and/or sacred words are spoken with each ribbon or as the cord is draped over the hands. Then the ribbons (cord) is loosely tied.

There are various ways to tie the knot and how it is done is up to the couple and/or officiant.
I've enjoyed officiating at weddings since 1992, which started because one of my sisters asked me to do it. Since then, family, friends and recommended others have invited me to be their "minister" - officiate. Each wedding has been a bit different in vows and celebrations and all, wonderfully lovely.

What I've always included is couple candles also known as image candles; an added sacredness with vows or special words spoken as the candles are lit.   Red: passion

Sometimes I use a man and woman candle of different colors. After they have burned completely down I do a psychic reading of the mixed  blended colors of the candles wax for the couple.

Who lights whose? Each person can light her or his own or exchange lighting. Vows/words can be spoken as they do.  I.E. "You are the light of my life" or "You light me up."

At my last wedding the message was quite clear early on during the melting of the wax.
See how the wax on one (bride) candle dropped over to the other (groom) in the shape of a heart? Beautiful, isn't it and if not for a guest seeing it, I wouldn't have captured this magical message - giving her heart completely to her husband.

There are many different kinds of couple - wedding - candles to choose from.  You don't have to wait for a wedding. Hubby and I marked our anniversaries by lighting the image candles. Enjoy celebrating your love!

In this blog there's more about handfasting and pagan weddings.

You can choose the color to best describe your love relationship.
A passionate orange coupling.

MAGICAL LAUGHTER, MERRY JOLLY PEACE

THE MAGIC OF LAUGHTER

It's not easy for many at this time of year to feel what we think we should, what others say we should, and what we've been taught to believe.

Just doing that is stressful. Many of us suffer: Sadness, depression, grief, nostalgia, worry - all part of the season, right?

If for just ONE moment, a couple minutes - at least-  you can find some healthy relief will you take it?

Laughter is the best medicine. Honestly.

In the morning and sometimes later, I go on YouTube to watch a funny video - I enjoy Steve Harvey on Family Feud. Also, I pull out one of Erma Brombeck's books - the younger readers might not know of her. The book  is sooooo funny! I go to sleep chuckling instead of grieving those I'm missing

Sometimes, I watch babies laughing videos - now they're the best. Belly laughs - their wee eyes crinkled up, hands waving in the air. Check a few out.

Laughter good for the belly and the soul.

It's actually a stress reliever for the physical body. Good for the digestive system. Try it. Laugh, out loud - ready? ho ho ho, hee hee, hee ha ha ha ha... feel that stomach contract? If not doing it more heartily. Once again, with feeling HO HO HO  HA HA HA HE HE HE for say 30 seconds.

And, if in public, your laughter will effect others- sure they'll think you're a bit off - but! they'll get a kick out of your crazy out loud laughing and at least crack a smile.

When you laugh, you breathe deeper, clear out your lungs. Really, do it for about 60 seconds. Go on... I dare ya.

Catch your breathe. Feel the energy in your body. Laugh again.

Bust a gut! Pee your pants. Now, your physical body is more stress free and has a chance to heal what is out of alignment.

My big sister who inconveniently  died on me - suddenly, -poof gone! ! How could she, being my bestest friend and fellow spiritual student and also the High Priestess of our coven.

Anyway - she and I laughed all the time. We were quite irreverent - not mean to anyone, just about life and the silliness of some - drama, drama people - you know what I mean.

Always felt greatly loved being with her. Always. Now I think of her, yes, I feel sad for a moment but then mentally I see us siting on her country home porch in our flannel nighgowns, drinking tea with milk and honey and laughing and talking about spiritual and magic things.

Who will you bring happiness to today by laughing with them?

Merry, jolly, peace to all. Do the best you can for a few seconds my fellow humans. Be kind.

RITUAL FOR IMBOLC: CLEAR THE MIND, SET A GOAL

IMBOLC

Imbolc known also as Feile Brighdeis the 'quickening of the year’  is a traditional

Celtic (Gaelic) festival , celebrated from February 1 through sundown February 2.

Based on a Celtic tradition, Imbolc was meant to mark the halfway point between winter solstice and the spring equinox in Neolithic Ireland and Scotland.

Also known as Brigid’s Day, Groundhog Day and Candlemas. It’s one of the eight festivals of the wheel of the year when fertility and light herald in the first signs of spring, the start of the agricultural year and the birth of livestock.

At this time the beloved pagan fiery power Goddess Brighid, (Gaelic name Breo-Saighead) is honored. The goddess of  healing powers, fertility she is also the goddess of loving unions – marriage.

At this time what or whom will you “marry up” with to feel fulfilled? She is a Goddess of Fire, of the Sun and of the Hearth.

Burn the past - let go of it by clearing out that which is no longer useful in your life.

Clean the home in preparation for new.

When I clean and clear, how good and fresh my mind is.
It gives space to think, now what?
Do you feel that way too?

It's also a good time to make a wish - perhaps as in a petition to Brighid (Bridget) to help manifest something long desired into an attainable goal.
Contact us at sf coaching.

We will teach you the formula to successfully fulfilling goals.

The traditional colors of Imbolc are white, red, and black, which are the colors of the Triple Goddess.

Also, colors of the ever-renewing forest, dark, deep greens, earthly browns, with the surprising pinks and yellow flowers that seem to pop up in the forest.

Close your eyes, clear your mind and mentally image sitting in a forest full of life in the quietness of it.

If you can, go into nature to clear your mind, heart and spirit and open to receiving images of - now what to grow?

CELEBRATE CHANGING TIMES: MABON; FALL EQUINOX

Soon the days will grow shorter and the nights, longer.

How will your life activities change?

How will your energy be different?

Your spirit feels it. Do you?

Each season brings change not only weather wise but your body and mind health.

Celebrate today - September 22, 2020 - Fall or Autumn Equinox or to my pagan family - Mabon.

Mabon, a pagan is also known as the Harvest Home, is a reminder to reap what you sow, give thanks to Mother Earth for the bountiful foods she provides. Count your blessings no matter how insignificant they might seem: my eyes still see, my ears hear, my legs continue to carry me and so forth.

And rest; prepare for the long, dark, cold times to come.

We busy humans rushing here and there. Even if not physically our minds race;  Internet searches are often frantic - something to meet the demand of the brain's numerous pathways going - where?

If you stop for a moment you'll feel your body and psychological shifts changes and become aware of the overall effects of the season.

Slow down TV binge watching  - well maybe just The Haunted Bay, Amazon Prime with moi investigating ghosts. Instead, read, draw, journal and have STORY TELLING TIMES with friends and family! Maybe include photos with it.  Really, you'll like it. (Caution: make sure the stories don't turn into "roasts" or are demeaning.)

With the changing weather we go through seasonable colds, sniffles, allergies. One might conjure up illnesses during with  "OH NO! Is it Covid? or ask self,  "Why do I feel so tired? Why's my eyes, sinus' throat ache?"

The Fall weather often brings a weakening in the body. Care for it properly.

Eat local vegetables and fruits in Fall colors for a healthier body.

Hunker down, nap more and go to bed earlier: Sleep brings more vivid and perhaps meaningful dreams at this time.

Pay attention, take note. Are they telling of future manifestations?

Secure a good dream book to help interpret your dreams.

The spirits and ghosts are preparing will arrive in this season.
