Halloween – dress up - dress down to the bone, it’s all for amusement, right?

Not if you follow some ancient beliefs about this special celebration. In ancient times Halloween (Holy Eve or All Hallows) and the days following November 1st - All Saints’ Day - November 2nd - All Soul’s Day or Day of the Dead, were more than fun; it was a sacred time of the year for people such as the Celts to honor their elderly, ancestors and dead. Festivities and rituals of these three days can be found in Celtic paganism history and later Catholicism holydays combined pagan beliefs with saints. In the Celtic pagan tradition it was thought that the veils between the two worlds - the living and dead - thinned so that spirits of the dead could float through or walk the earth to visit their living relatives. Then they crossed back over to the “underworld”.

During the spirits’ visit spooky things happened, as you can imagine. The living would dress-up in hopes that some spirits wouldn’t recognize and haunt them. But if they wanted the spirits to visit they would invite them with a similar ritual below.

To connect with the spirits of your loved ones to say hello and/or ask a question do this beautiful sacred ritual.

Gather: Pen (perhaps a favorite color) and paper
Flower – any kind
Photo of deceased
Incense – pleasant plus helps create a mood
Candles – white, black and orange – white – clear visions, black - spiritual unknown and orange for season and color of renewal
Burning vessel – ashtray or cauldron and matches
Glass or bowl of water – signifies the other world and also can douse any fire mishaps.
Sweet & beverage – Symbolic gesture for visiting spirit guests
Table or clothe on floor – to lay the above upon.
Chair - optional
Or you can do it simply by lighting a white candle, place it in a window along with a treats and add a chair for a spirit to sit and visit. Remember to snuff candle before leaving the room for the night.
For a few minutes quiet your self, then say, ‘Only good can enter herein.’ Perhaps add a prayer to the Divine to bring forth healing, loving energies to you and protect you from negative fearful thoughts and/or energies. After all it is Halloween and negative energies/entities can roam free along with your loved ones’ spirits.
Next - make a list of all of those who have passed, and how they affected your life. I write thanking my departed loved ones for all they gave me - love - support etc and to my ancestors for bestowing blessings upon me such as the abilities and talents that help me living fully.

You can fold the paper, keep it overnight and bury in earth or burn it while performing your ritual. As the paper burns it turns to smoke rising up and is symbolic for sending your thought to the mental psychic airwaves. Doing either is ‘mailing your message’.

Peer into the water, relax and connect to the psychic mind - perhaps an image will form or a memory will be recalled. After that, invite your spirits to visit by taking your white candle, sweets and beverage to a window so as they walk the earth they will see the light and recognize you (home.)

Stay as long as you like, thinking of your loved ones, talking to her and him. If you hear, think or sense a message was given, take note it for later examination. Or, after your ritual (remember to snuff the candles and incense), you might dream about the spirits, as this is an easier way for them to communicate.

Spirits often can’t get through to their loved ones because the grief is so strong. To your best ability, endeavor to be calm, upbeat and peaceful. You might get a message for another (relative or friend). If you do, share it.

Spirit communication is often stronger when conducted in a group - even two people - so perhaps a relative and/or friend might want to do this ritual with you to share in the experience.

I’ve heard you talk about spirits and ghosts. Is there a difference? 
To me there is a difference. Although a ghost is the spirit or energy of a person, it has not gone onto a place of peaceful rest. Rather it lingers on Earth reliving the same scene over and over long after it has left the physical body.

They are stuck in time and space and the aspects of their deaths. Ghost (and spirits too) can be a floating white wisp of a cloud or a bolt of energy shooting along a darkened corridor. Since ghosts aren’t able to let go of the physical plane they appear to more people than spirits do.
The majority of times ghosts experienced a sudden, and often tragic, violentdeath. Ghost manifestations or appearances are frequently seen as disembodied person spirits. People have told me of seeing just a hand on a doorknob or a menacing face staring through a window or a body falling down a staircase. For example, if a person committed suicide by hanging, you might see only the face of that person with a rope tied around the neck. Usually, the ghost was a victim who did not receive justice. Some ghosts were perpetrators of a crime.

Then again there are some spirits who just liked their earth time and decide to stay for whatever reason they believe is right. I encountered one such ghost in an alley in San Francisco Barbary Coast district. 
A couple of my own ghost stories ended rather well. Both were murder victims. Many years ago before I became truly involved with, or understood, my medium abilities, I encountered a young woman named Sandy (not her real name) who was murdered execution style. Sandy’s untimely death only informed me she was shot.

This ghost hunt preceded Matthew Abaya's scary (and sometimes funny) Indie film, "Vamparah" debuting at the city's Chinatown's historical building, The Great Star Theatre. The history alone, albeit the paranormal activity, is infamous and famous - suspicious death, gambling, and lots of drama plus Chinese opera.

The inside is old. Funky - original seats, stage curtains, old haunted bathroom, but excellent to get 'that feel' - know what I mean?

For those following my posts on my spirit communication and experiences (many of which are in my book How to Talk With Spirits: Séances• Mediums • Ghost Hunts), I'll write a downside of it. Especially as Hallo Eve (Halloween) and Day of the Dead draw closer and the veils between the two worlds drop and spirits are free to walk the earth.

How a spirit attachment happened to me: Exhausted from book success I crashed and in the course of recovering found a spirit attached to my body.

When the paperback version of book was released in April 2017 I was inundated with invitations to speak at book party events where I read an excerpt and answer questions.  

Then I lead a group meditation with the hope of contacting deceased loved ones and would add, "If the spirit moves me, I'll share." 

Well, I of all people, a seasoned medium, should have known that wasn't a good statement to make. Eager to contact living loved ones spirits lined up. Almost every guest, if not all, received a message. 

If you've seen the movie "Ghosts" where Whoopi Goldberg is burden with so many spirits waiting in line to talk to the living, that's what it was like. "Me, me, me next!"

With the almost weekly events through May and July I became so exhausted mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually - not sleeping well, eating badly, trying to keep up with book party requests and most importantly not meditating and cleansing my energy enough!  

I took a couple of months off and delayed book events. 

To Heal: My massage therapist and acupuncturist are very aware how to work with me, a psychic/medium. First I went for a massage where an attachment was discovered in my lower back. As soon as she pushed on that area I FELT and then saw a dark energy of a vampire entity. 

As the  therapist dug deeply (ouch!) I literally felt a great release. But not entirely hence after to my acupuncturist where it finally dissipated. I refocused on my self care and am free of that entity! 

It's not the first time those dark entities have tried to invade me, my then young son and my space but and I've always stopped them with NO!! and I SEE you! (they don't like that).

Where did I pick the attachment up? First know that you, me, spirits and entities are all energy - energy that floats around and attracts and deflects.  

I believe the attachment happened at two book parties: one where overwhelming s grief and emotional chaos prevailed. Murder and suicide victims, early infant deaths. In the chaos my psychic energy frayed as I channeled information. At the next one, same weekend a guest told of an evil spirit in a home during her childhood where her father committed suicide. I had already pulled in this entity now added to its energy.

If you open to spirit communication, take care before and after: mediate, and cleanse self and place you are entering. Do not invite spirits to "touch you" as I've heard a medium do. Even a spirit you think is friendly or believe is a loved one might not be. If you think you have an attachment or see dark shadows lurking around and feel frightened, contact a professional medium.  I'm back to my book tours in person and Skype. Gary was an easy to talk with host and told a couple of his own stories; he worked at a very haunted building confirmed by many other employees and he also told of his most touching, unusual story of his father's passing.

I shared my first paranormal investigation in San Francisco's strip club where a bizarre death took place and the creepy meeting of low grade entities in a SF site where the most deaths from the 1906 earthquake in the city happened. I was asked what was the scariest paranormal experience I had and that was Jamaica when on my first demon possession. Hope you have a chance to listen and please ask questions. HALLOWEEN, A SPOOKY, good time and all for amusement, right?

The night is much more than just for fun. All Hallows Eve or Halloween and November First and Second are sacred times for many throughout the world to honor the dead.

Cultures have special days to honor ancestors and the dead like the Celts and Mexicans.

The Catholic Church combined the pagan beliefs with their own to create a day to honor the saints on November first as did Mexico's Indigenous people for the Day of the Dead.

Celtic pagans believed the veils between the two worlds- that of the living and dead - thin then drop so spirits can walk the earth to visit their living relatives before crossing back over to the “Underworld.”

The spirits were not only our loved ones, but also all spirits who want to walk the earth, feel alive and connect to the living. During the spirits’ visit, spooky things happened, as you can imagine.

The Celts disguised themselves to waylay troublesome or evil spirits so they wouldn’t recognize and haunt people. Tradition warned people, especially the elderly, the sick and the young, to stay safely hidden inside so they wouldn’t be grabbed and taken to the “Underground.”

You can enjoy a most beautiful and heartfelt ritual in your home on All Hallows - Halloween. It can be an elaborate affair or a simple one as read in my book.
