So glad you loved it! I combined a few different inspirations to write this book. First: penguins! I have a friend who is obsessed with them and she put this idea into my head. I realised penguins are charming and funny but also have a lot to teach us about resilience and determination. Second: environmental issues. I just love the natural world and I'm concerned about the state of the planet. Third: older people. I've met so many women in their eighties and nineties who are still embracing adventures. I admire their unstoppable spirit and I wanted to give a message of hope for us all in later life. (less)

Dear Wendy
Your heartfelt message has given me such strong emotions. I am so very sorry for your illness. As somebody who has battled with health issues for 20 years, I really understand how exhausting that is, and having to care for somebody else at the same time is very, very challenging. You are amazing for managing it all. Thank you for sending such kind words about How The Penguins Saved Veronica. It's important for me to write stories that will inspire and uplift, and to know that it's worked in your case means so much to me. I wish Call Of The Penguins and Gone With The Penguins were published in the USA (is that where you are?) but it's out of my hands. I am delighted you have managed to source them and I hope they will bring you some joy and solace too. (less)

Purrsy philosopy and approaching Penguins

Hi!
How has your summer been? Purrsy has been enjoying his, as you can see.

description
Although he’s lost both his sight and hearing, he still knows how to enjoy life. He still loves the warmth of sunshine on fur, the summer scents on the breeze, the bedtime snuggles. I’m striving to take a leaf out of Purrsy’s book. Busy as I am despairing about the terrible news from around the world, I’m keen not to miss Read more of this blog post »

“There are three types of people in this world, Very. (He called me Very.) There are those who make the world worse, those who make no difference and those who make the world better. Be one who makes the world better, if you can.”
Hazel Prior, How the Penguins Saved Veronica

“Tears come when you’ve been too strong for much too long.”
Hazel Prior, How the Penguins Saved Veronica

“Don’t get me wrong. I do like people, I like them very much. I just can’t cope with them in huge quantities. I’m so aware of all those emotions, all those plans and dreams and longings. All those agendas. It’s like this massive overload to my system.”
Hazel Prior, Away with the Penguins

“What are you going to do with your life?" In one way or another it seemed that people had been asking her this forever; teachers, her parents, friends at three in the morning, but the question had never seemed this pressing and still she was no nearer an answer... "Live each day as if it's your last', that was the conventional advice, but really, who had the energy for that? What if it rained or you felt a bit glandy? It just wasn't practical. Better by far to be good and courageous and bold and to make difference. Not change the world exactly, but the bit around you. Cherish your friends, stay true to your principles, live passionately and fully and well. Experience new things. Love and be loved, if you ever get the chance.”
David Nicholls, One Day

“All morning I struggled with the sensation of stray wisps of one world seeping through the cracks of another. Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes -- characters even -- caught in the fibers of your clothes, and when you open the new book, they are still with you.”
Diane Setterfield, The Thirteenth Tale
