It would be lovely if other researches could unearth more details in the life of Lucas, Buffon’s unacknowledged son. But as far as I could determine, he quietly faded from the scene after Buffon’s death. Which was probably a wise choice, given the tumult of the French Revolution.

As for Buffonet: no, no recognized offspring. The family inheritance (such as it was after the Revolution) appears to have passed primarily to Buffon’s great-nephew Benjamin Nadault de Buffon, whose grandmother Antoinette was Buffon’s sister. Benjamin’s son Henri Nadault de Buffon became an historian, and his compilation of family accounts became an important source of insight into his great-great-uncle’s life.(less)

As for the definition of “panther”: yeah, that goes to the heart of the problem with nomenclature. Just because something goes by a distinct name, doesn’t mean it’s the same species.(less)

“Time, if not space, renders all of us travelers. Cling as we might, we are ultimately compelled to let go of the familiar, to forge affinities with the new, and to sense the approach of the more unfamiliar still. We feel our way. If we are as fortunate as the Blind Traveler, we are given the grace to listen, with equal attention, to the intelligence of winds and the solemnity of silence. To remain, joyfully, awake to the path itself.”
Jason Roberts

“Life...is not a simple thread which is only extended in length, it is a large web or rather a network, from interval to interval, casts branches to the side in order to unite with networks of other order.”
Jason Roberts, Every Living Thing: The Great and Deadly Race to Know All Life

“This was quite the leap, since at the time insects were believed to spontaneously generate.”
Jason Roberts, Every Living Thing: The Great and Deadly Race to Know All Life
