The Mirk and the Midnight Hour by Jane Nickerson

The Mirk and Midnight Hour by Jane Nickerson
The Mirk and Midnight Hour

This story based on Tam Lin, a Scottish ballad about a girl rescuing her lover from the queen of the faeries, takes place during the Civil War. The tough and genteel heroine, Violet, has grown used to the horrors of war, and nurses the Confederate soldiers brought to town. One day, she finds a wounded Union soldier, a young writer named Thomas Lynn, who is being hidden in the wild by the mysterious Van Zeldts, a trio of young Africans who live with a strange white man who is both a witch doctor and a real physician...but he hides something sinister. Violet accidentally befriends the young Van Zeldt woman. But when Violet learns the otherworldly Van Zeldts plan to sacrifice Thomas to a strange god, she has to stand against their terrifying enchantments. This was such a new and compelling approach to an old theme, I felt I was reading a wholly original story. The Van Zeldts were fantastic creations, African faery folk.

The Falconer by Elizabeth May

The Falconer (The Falconer, #1) by Elizabeth May
The Falconer

Steampunk and faeries and a red-haired girl seeking vengeance was a book I couldn't resist. In an alternative Scotland, 1844, Aileana hunts malignant faeries with diy weapons. She's capable of taking care of herself, but her partner in crime is Kiaran, a faery boy trained in martial arts. Her father is distant and blames her for her mother's murder by the evil faery woman Aileana hunts. Aileana's other allies are a childhood friend, Gavin, who can see faeries, and a male version of Tinkerbell named Derrick.

When Aileana learns a seal is breaking and the bad faeries will be entering the world, she and Kiaran try to stop this disaster in a fierce battle.

I loved Aileana. And Kiaran is darkly fascinating. Gavin isn't a distant second either, with his gentlemanly concern and flask of alcohol. And, despite Aileana's mission, it is the aggravating traditions and prejudices of her time that she struggles with as much as her fights against the faeries.

Rosemary and Rue by Seanan Mcguire

Rosemary and Rue (October Daye, #1) by Seanan McGuire
Rosemary and Rue
October (Toby) Daye is a half human/half faery living in San Francisco. She is a knight serving the faery king of that region. After a case nearly destroys her life, she is lying low. Then an old frenemy is murdered, but not before cursing Toby to find her killer.
Toby has connections with each court in the city, some of which are perilous and tricky. There is a water faery in the Japanese gardens, the feral and sexy king of cats, and a criminal overlord who has a shady past with Toby. It's a murder mystery with a fierce heroine and a fun and fascinating cast of characters perfect for the setting. Best of all, it's only the first in a series.
