Wink, Poppy, Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke

Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke
Wink Poppy Midnight

With its unique portraits of a group of young people struggling through the trials of adolescence, this is a vivid, dark fairy tale of a book, sparse and lyrical.

Midnight is the wounded boy surviving his parents' divorce. Wink is an awkward girl with a strange family. Poppy is the spoiled mean girl. The Yellows are Poppy's gang.

No one is who they at first appear to be. Everyone has secrets and these secrets collide one night in one fateful act--a prank gone wrong. Nothing that happens is expected, and the love triangle between Wink, Midnight, and Poppy is headed for a bad ending because of Midnight's desperation, Wink's belief in fairy tales, and Poppy's cruelty. This is one of my favorite books of the year, especially because of the ending. Definitely for anyone who loves Francesca Lia Block.

Strange Grace by Tessa Gratton

Strange Grace by Tessa Gratton
Strange Grace
Loved this book! Set in the village of Three Graces, the story is about young Mairwen, a witch and daughter of a witch. Her town sacrifices one boy very 7 years, to the devil of the forest, and two of Mairwen's best friends--the noble, affable Rhun and the brooding, temperamental Arthur--are set for the honor.
The forest is a character itself, a place of bone boys and mad bird women. Mairwen feels familiar with the forest, since her father was one of the sacrifices.
The relationship between Mairwen, Rhun, and Arthur is wrought with complications and there's a mystery at the core of the sacrifice. A book for anyone who loves dark fairy tales, haunted forests, and the movie The Witch.

Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody

Ace of Shades (The Shadow Game, #1) by Amanda Foody
Ace of Shades
Set in a sort of punk Victorian Las Vegas called New Reynes, with electricity and cars, the story follows Enne, a proper young lady searching for her foster mother, Lourdes, who is a bit of a revolutionary. Enne seeks help in this dodgy city by contacting one of its infamous street lords--Levi Glaisyer.
The second POV is Levi's, as he struggles to help Enne because she has what he needs to pay off another crime lord. Levi and Enne have to navigate other crime lords and a plot to keep dangerous royalty from resurfacing.
The charm of the story lies with Enne--who, despite her proper upbringing is a reckless and curious creature--and Levi, whose toughness and deviousness disguise a king heart.
I loved this book, with its unique worldbuilding and a sizzling romance that carries through a dazzling and perilous intrigue.
