Cheryl Matthynssens was born in Upland, California, holds a teaching degree and is a licensed addictions counselor. This has allowed her to interview hundreds of personalities over her career.
She loves that everyone is unique and this appreciation and interest has informed and inspired her writing.

Matthynssens enjoys the universe of fantasy for the way it connects to the mind’s creativity and imagination as a colorful escape to distant lands of mystical beasts and fantastic quests where the hero really does save the day. As she’s matured artistically, Matthynssens has found writing to be a comforting counterbalance to a world where beloved characters don’t always get back up after they fall down.

I have a harder time fighting procrastination. If I sit down to write, I almost always can just hammer out at least a rough first draft. Even if it sucks, it has enough of a skeleton to begin to build on in the rewrite process.

However, getting myself to sit down and write. There is the problem. I can always find a reason not to write right now. I don't know why I do that because I love to write. I think it is because once I start writing, the world around me disappears. It is just me, the keyboard and a foreign world.(less)

I am still a fairly new author to independent publishing so I am sure this will change.

However, in The Blackguard, I ran into an opposite problem. I mapped a character that was supposed to be a villain. However, as I began to write him, I liked him so much that the story shifted and a different man rose to the top as the villain of the story. I won't say which character as I do not want to spoil the story. (less)

Life After a Series

Self-publishing is a constantly changing animal.  When I first wrote Outcast and the Blackguard, it seemed easy to market.  But as I was writing the final books of The Blue Dragon's Geas, the marketing dynamic changed.  Tactics I was using to sell 400 books a day suddenly fell flat.  When you self-publish you have to both write and then sell the books.

When Fallen Tiers, the last book, was finished Read more of this blog post »

“Words have power, my son. Words can cut to the heart and soothe the deepest hurts. They can be puzzles that leave another pondering for days. I prefer to cast my spells of words in ways that make others think. It is a fault, I fear, that has come with age.”
Cheryl Matthynssens, The Blackguard

“A man has the strength to face what he is thrown in life. If he falls or is beaten, he does not complain but gets up and rides in to face the challenge once more.”
Cheryl Matthynssens, The Blackguard

“Killing another with slow, deliberate intent is a warping of the gifts that magic offers. It warps the mage in a manner he cannot repair. You cannot kill another slowly and not twist something within yourself, Alador. Remember this: magic is not without cost regardless of its wonder and magnificence.”
Cheryl Matthynssens The Blackguard

“The most awesome powers are those not wielded.”
Brian Rathbone, Call of the Herald

“A country is judged by the actions at the top. Such is the way across the world. Nations are judged by their rulers, and not by those that live within the borders.”
Cheryl Matthynssens, The Blackguard
