Moving Moments

I've risen to the surface of writing after many months buried in our home renovation project. Moved in and mostly settled, the work and costs of renovating the home are dribbling to an end like the leaks I fixed.

Not long after we moved in, New Zealand faced a dark cloud of evil. The tragedy of many innocent lives stolen by a twisted man were soon followed by blue skies opening with human compassion. In a country with an enlightened woman leader, the nation mourns together for the victims and loved ones. Our innocence as a peaceful nation surrounded by the Pacific is shattered, but not broken. Love must prevail.

During the shelter building time, my novel Dream Walker has waited patiently for the creator. Happy to say DW is not entirely neglected by the parent. Early in 2019 I changed hats from home builder to writer and drove to Auckland for a personal meeting with an Oscar winning producer of feature films. Our long meeting together had the ease of a good friendship. In New Zealand style it was courteous and unpretentious. Time flew. We grasped hands like we'd be meeting again. I drove back home with moving moments of another life for Dream Walker.

"What did you like most, the book or the film?"

Renovation Relevation

Since my last post many weeks ago, I dove deep into a fixer-upper home we purchased located on a spectacular ridge with expansive views of sea level rising. One of those rare lifetime moments when a home finds you. This home DYI renovation endeavour, along with the birth of our precious first grandchild, is my excuse for being tardy and tired.

A nice holiday break in the remodelling action has been a wonderful pause to reflect on what is most important in life. A place to call home is high on the list. Being connected to family and friends and sharing time is of great importance. Love and Peace must be the global chart topper.

In a few days I'll be picking up the tools again and getting back to work on our home improvement reality show. Very excited to get moved in and to pursue other creative goals for the New Year!

Happy New Year to the Nice!

Karma to the Naughty!

Full Moon Rising

It's a full moon here tonight. New Zealand is a day ahead of North America, the first country in the world to see the new day due to our location near International Date Line. If you are fortunate to climb to the summit of Mount Hikurangi, while standing alone to see the rising sun, you will be the first witness to the new day before anyone on Earth.

Ancient mariners crossing vast oceans to settle in New Zealand navigated by the sun, moon, stars, planets, tides, currents, waves and winds. No sextant, no compass, no radar, no GPS. Nothing to guide them but an ingrained connection to the environment around them and the knowledge gained from generations of navigators sharing their learned wisdom.

The wisdom of the ancients adapted to the environment is an important aspect of my novel, 'Dream Walker'. In this modern world of failing ecosystems caused by human exploits, we need to look again to the wisdom of our ancestors. Environmental collapse of ecosystems are spreading like a cancer. We do know there are cures, but presently the prognosis is not good.

Starting tomorrow copies of my novel, 'Dream Walker' will be listed on Goodreads as a giveaway. 2% of all proceeds from sales of Dream Walker by the author are donated to select non-profit environmental watchdog groups. A small effort to help turn the full moon tide to Nature's side.

Thank you for supporting Dream Walker.

Shelter from the Storm

Globally we all seek shelter from the increasing intensity of storms, environmental, political, social and economic extremes building on the horizon. What to do?

In these days of instant news, likely I don't have to tell you. Current events show America gets massive hurricane hammerings, worldwide stock markets dive deep into red, the "Highest Court in the Land" puts in a political wedge, the world grows more deeply divided driving immigrants seeking shelter.

As write this here in New Zealand, surrounded by the Pacific Ocean moat, we are not immune to global events. As a harsh hint to me I was woken last night by high winds and heavy rain pounding our shelter. A reminder that Mother Nature is the unsympathetic leveller of my human ego. Looking back, I have experienced the fury of a Class 4 hurricane with a direct hit on a small island in the South Pacific. As the roof started to lift, I was on my knees bowing to Mother Nature as I sought shelter in the storm.

Timely Surfer Tale

Just returned from a three day trip back to my surfing past in our old home base in New Zealand. We gathered together with good friends, including a few surf sessions with surfing mate Tony.

On the first paddle out, I felt like my right arm was channelling the Tin Man (torn muscle from our summer in California). Not as quick to heal as time rolls by.

As a wave approached, there was no pain, no past, no future. I spun the longboard and paddled like I had found the fountain of youth. On my feet and riding the pure liquid wave of energy, there was only this moment.
This is what I love about surfing.

In this day of instant communication chasing us daily, we all need our own wave to ride, in some way or form. Time to reflect on what is most important. Time to unplug the electronic drugs and take a walk in Mother Nature.

Independent Authors Rise

What a world we find ourselves in for independent storytellers unleashed from traditional publishing. The potential to find a vast audience is there at tips of our fingers. Its liberating! And thought provoking...

When I self published my first hardbound coffee table book "Lake Tahoe" many years ago, the first 10,000 copies were printed in Japan, shipped to California, picked up at the port of Oakland in a rented U-Haul truck. We proceeded to overload the truck with seemingly endless heavy cases of books, maxing out the carrying capacity of our rental truck. Creeping up the Sierra over Donner Summit, our overloaded and underpowered rental truck strained and slowed to a Donner Party crawl, allowing our enlisted friend Jimmy to step onto the running boards and pee off the side while snailing up Interstate 80. Arriving at our rental home publishing headquarters, and then unloading the dense cargo, we collapsed into a state of exhaustion and dismay. Staring at the garage full of books, the reality of having to sell them sunk in. Gratefully, my first book was well received. We sold all of them, and did more additional print runs and sold them too.

Now days, I can get my books by print on demand through my publisher and Amazon. But, one thing hasn't changed. If it's not a story well told, it will linger on the bookshelf. A well crafted story stands the test of time.

World Leaders

This week world leaders converge on New York City to gather at the United Nations General Assembly. Our New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern is at the UN too, with her infant daughter. Jacinda is the first world leader to bring her baby with her to the General Assembly, because she's breastfeeding.

Jacinda is the third woman Prime Minister in NZ. New Zealand just celebrated 125 years of being the first democracy in the world to allow women the right to vote. Wish I could say it's all a rosy picture here for women, but there's a pay equity gap and domestic abuse not to be ignored.

Trump's there at the UN too, even though he says he despises the UN and all it stands for.

Speaking of people with massive egos... Bob Woodward's latest book, "Fear: Trump in the White House" has broken sales records for the publisher. The subject of Trump sure sells lots of books. For me, no thanks. I'd rather read a great novel.

Larry Prosor/Blog Baby

I'm a self-imposed social media cautionary. For the first time in my life, I'm dipping baby toes into Blog World. Experienced bloggers, have patience for this toddler.

I have many stories to tell, and only so much time on Earth. After years as a professional photographer, I'm testing my written storytelling with my first novel, Dream Walker. Please, if you wish, check out my website, http://www.larryprosor.com for a glimpse into my creative endeavours. Thank you for your support!
