Lissette asked Heather Demetrios:

Hi, I read I'll Meet You There and I really liked it. I'm excited for Bad Romance because its such an important topic that needs to be talked about especially in high school. My question is when it came to writing about the relationship, do you think that Grace wanted an escape from her home life and that's what she saw in Gavin?

Heather Demetrios Hey! ABSOLUTELY Gavin was an escape from her home life. This was the case in my high school bad romance, too. I think when you don't get the love, respect, and gentleness you need at home, you're going to look elsewhere. Gavin was offering that to Grace. That's not to say there weren't other major reasons she stayed, like love and feeling tied to a person. And fear and guilt and shame - these are all reasons she stays too. It's so much harder to get out of a bad romance when you don't have support at home and people who can recognize the signs. Grace's mom is in a bad romance, too, so of course she can't see what Grace is dealing with because she's blind herself.
