It really depends...
Sometimes and idea pops into my head and flows right out through my fingers as they move across the keyboard while I'm already working on a scene. Other times, I have to kick the idea around in my head a little bit and see if it will in fact work with what I'm currently writing. If I find that I really like the idea (whether it's an actual event or simply a line of dialogue), I'll write it down in my notes and save it until I'm able to find a home for it later on down the road.
