Goodreads asked Jan Steele:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Jan Steele The best thing I did when I started writing was find a writer's group. Peer critiques are the most valuable tool a writer can have. It's not always easy hearing what's not working on your piece, but if you are willing to listen and revise, your writing becomes stronger--which is what all writers should be striving for. And when you do get critiqued, try your best to be open-minded to what is being said and not defensive. Writers only want to help other writers be their very best.
