Your books cover quite a wide range of topics and genres. How do you decide what to write about?

Lawrence Wright Todd, people keep asking me this and I feel like they're touching a sore spot. At this very moment, I don't know what I'm going to write about next. And it just feels miserable. In the past, what happens is that an idea passes into my mind, perhaps from a newspaper or a conversation, and I begin to play with it. Usually it goes nowhere, but occasionally... oh, where is that idea now?
