Goodreads asked Janice Dembosky:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Janice Dembosky I've always been intrigued by the Biblical "love triangle" of Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar. In fact, the title for my book comes from Sarah's words to her husband, Abraham: "Cast out the bond woman and her son!" I decided to write a modern version of that story. Because I needed someone who could be literally "cast out," it was natural to think of the Amish practice of shunning. So the modern Hagar character became an Amish girl I named Hannah. Also, I have lived near an Old Order Amish community most of my life. Add the powers of observation to careful research, and I had the trappings of my story. I don't want to mislead readers into thinking that The Bond Woman: An Amish Woman in Love with a Man on The Outside falls under the genre of Christian Literature. It does not.
