A week before his graduation, Jared cornered me one last time.
“Will you miss me, Kit Kat?”
“Yes.”
“Will you think about me?”
I couldn’t lie. “Every day.”
He grinned. “I promise I’ll call you in a few days.”
My own smile was unanticipated. “Okay.”
Jared graduated and moved away to college, never calling me. I thought I had fallen in love with Jared, but he left. I had meant nothing to him.

I brush past Adam Beckett and out of my room. Dash shuts the door, trailing me in a rush. “Where’s the fire?”
“Does your mouth have a damn leak?”
“What? Your dad’s a nice guy. Why couldn’t he go to dinner with us?”
Opening my driver’s side door, I glare at him over the roof. “Are you serious right now, or are you having a stroke? Because if you are, I’ll leave you here for an ambulance to pick up.”
