Suzanne Nelson She woke in the coffin, the wooden stake still clutched in her hands, her neck stinging from the two fresh puncture wounds dappled with dried blood. Through the mound of loose dirt above her came the sound of a warm heart beating, and her mouth began to water..
Suzanne Nelson Dear Sierra,
Thanks for the note. I'm working on the sixth book in the CAKE POP CRUSH foodie series, titled SUNDAE MY PRINCE WILL COME. Look for it in the winter/spring of 2018. I love writing the foodie books because they give me a chance to experiment with many different kinds of baking and food.
All the best,
Suzanne Nelson
Suzanne Nelson Dear Marina, Thanks for the question. There are four other books in the CAKE POP series: HOT COCOA HEARTS, YOU'RE BACON ME CRAZY, MACARONS AT MIDNIGHT, and DONUT GO BREAKING MY HEART. If you enjoyed CAKE POP, you might want to try one of the others. Carpe diem, and keep on reading!
Best,
Suzanne Nelson
Suzanne Nelson Dear Ayla, I'm so glad you loved Macarons at Midnight so much! For the ending, I wanted it to be romantic and to take place at midnight, which was how I started formulating the final scenes. My ideas for books come from many different places--experiences I had as a teen; experiences friends and family may have had; even dreams I have! For Macarons, I wanted to write a story where a boy and girl connect in one magical moment but then spend the rest of the book discovering, through fun mistaken identity and misadventures, whether they're truly meant for each other or not. I'm hard at work on a fifth foodie book for the series as well, so check out my Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter feeds for updates on my latest projects and fun giveaways, etc. In the meantime, carpe diem and read on! All the best, Suzanne
Suzanne Nelson Hi Brittany,
Thanks for the note. Right now, MACARONS AT MIDNIGHT will be available in bookstores and online in June, and HOT COCOA HEARTS will be available in October. I'm hoping YOU'RE BACON ME CRAZY may follow sometime after that but I don't know for sure. I hope this helps! Carpe diem and read on!
Suzanne Nelson I've always been fascinated by lost shoes I see on the side of the road or handing from trees or telephone wires. One day I was driving around my home town and I drove past a single red slingback sitting on a boulder in front of a small cottage. It stayed there for weeks, in rain and wind, and all the while I wondered who had left it there and why. When I mentioned this to my sister (who incidentally has a small obsession with shoes), she told me that I needed to write a story about "lost shoes," and SERENDIPITY'S FOOTSTEPS was born.
Suzanne Nelson I work through it. It's true that sometimes I need to sit with a problem in my manuscript for a few days before I can clearly see my way out of it, but I don't let that keep me from writing. Maybe I skip over a small section on a draft for a day or two, and then come back to it with fresh eyes. I don't let myself take the day off, though. I write around the problematic part and then circle back to it.
Suzanne Nelson That it's my dream come true! I wanted to be a writer since I was about five years old, and the fact that I get to sit down at my desk every day and do what I love....well, it doesn't get any better than that! Also, reading has always been an escape for me, especially when I was a teenager. If I can give my readers something to relate to in my stories, something to think about or carry with them through their lives, then my words have a purpose, which is wonderful.
Suzanne Nelson I'm currently at work on my next young adult historical novel, titled THE FREEDOM DRESS. It's about slavery and the Civil Rights Movement. It's been an emotional project to research and deals with themes I'm very passionate about.
Suzanne Nelson Inspiration comes from everything--dreams, people I come into contact with, history, even other books I read. Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote about being a "transparent eyeball," about absorbing everything that the world has to offer and opening every sense. I listen and I observe. When an idea strikes and sticks, I know it's something I need to pursue. Sometimes, an idea cocoons itself in a corner of my mind where it waits, growing and changing, until I'm ready to write it. Other times, I don't have the luxury of waiting and have to dive right in with an idea. Either way, writing is as much work as inspiration. Dreaming up ideas is only one part of the process; getting them onto paper is the real challenge.
Suzanne Nelson Get into a writing routine. I've learned that I'm at my most productive when I write every weekday for several hours a day. I consider it a job that I'm accountable for, just like any other occupation. If I'm doing a "good" job, then I'm at my desk making progress. I can't say it's always easy to do this. In fact, sometimes it's painful. Still, it's writing is a lot like exercising. When I do it each day, it's easier to motivate myself to return to it. If I skip a few days, I feel out of shape and out of touch with my characters and plot.
