My Eagle Leap of Faith
It's happened.
After fourteen years working in higher education, I’ve officially made the leap: I’m now a full-time writer.
It wasn’t an easy decision. I’d built a stable career within the UNC System, surrounded by incredible people and deeply meaningful work with the North Carolina public higher education institutions. But when a round of organizational restructuring offered me a severance package, I took a hard look at the other thing that had shaped my life—the thing I’ve always dreamed of doing full time. Writing. Specifically, continuing to build The Tarot Sequence into the full ten-book arc I’ve always envisioned, while also launching new storylines and projects that have lived too quietly and too patiently in my imagination for far, far too long.
I won’t pretend it isn’t terrifying. Creative work doesn’t come with health insurance, holiday pay, or predictable paychecks. But it does come with purpose and joy. And—thanks to all of you—real possibility. I’ve been lucky enough to grow a small but fiercely loyal readership, and your support is what’s made this even remotely viable.
Because of you, I get to wake up every morning and shape the next chapter of Rune’s story. Because of you, I get to take real risks—like launching a Kickstarter this fall for "Saber", a brand-new romantasy novel. I'll be using this Kickstarter as a trial run for future Tarot Sequence-related projects, too, such as a published anthology novel "The Early Adventures of Rune & Brand", which I'm releasing in serial format through my Patreon site starting this August.
There’s more to come, and I’ll be sharing it here and across my other channels, especially my Patreon site. But for now, I just wanted to say thank you—for reading, for waiting between books, and for believing in Rune's misfit found family as much as I do.
Let’s see what we can dream up together.
All my best,
KD
PS - here's the working blurb for SABER, a novel I wrote at the same time I was finishing THE LAST SUN. While nearly all of my creative work these last 15 years has been in the Tarot world, this story refused to sit still until I wrote it. It would be a pleasure to raise enough money to polish and publish it.
SABER is a standalone romantasy about a fae orphan named Alexsei who is forced into an arranged engagement with a shape-shifter from a hidden mountain town—only to find himself unexpectedly seen, respected, and maybe even loved. But as local tensions rise and attacks begin to circle closer, Alex realizes his engagement was never just about him—it was a transaction. And someone is willing to kill to keep the truth buried. With a culture he’s only just beginning to understand, an emerging magical talent, and a saber-tooth cat-shifting fiancé who may be the only safe place he’s ever known, Alexsei must uncover the assassin’s identity before he loses the family he's only just found.

PPPS - I'm only a few chapters from finishing THE MISFIT CARAVAN. I've written more in the last 3 weeks than I have in the last 3 years. It's insane, and amazing, and exciting. I said above that I was grateful for your patience—and I am. I hope that patience pays off. :) -- KD

The Tarot Sequence: A 10-Book Series
I’ve made an important change to the second half of The Tarot Sequence series: what was originally planned as Book IV will now be told across two full novels. The story simply grew too big to be contained in one volume — and rather than cut key moments, rush pacing, or condense a 500-600 page manuscript, I’ve decided to give it the space it deserves.
Book IV, titled The Misfit Caravan, still takes Rune and his crew on a cross-country road trip through modern-day America, culminating in a major showdown beneath an underground fae city. Book V, The Exiled Courts, picks up immediately after — shifting the action to the Pacific Northwest, where we’ll explore the Atlantean Exile Community, a dangerous magical wasteland, and endgame events that will change the life for every member of Sun Estate irrevocably.
The best part? The writing momentum is real. I’m on track to deliver the finished manuscript for The Misfit Caravan by the end of July, and The Exiled Courts should follow not long after — ideally by April or May of 2026.
This shift also marks a bigger decision: I now see The Tarot Sequence as a 10-book series, with a natural break after Book V. I’m looking forward to exploring new opportunities for the final five books — including tighter control of publication timelines, a continued partnership with my amazing audiobook narrator, and an upgrade in print quality for future hardcover and paperback editions.
I am so happy you're on this journey with me.
Best,
KD

Checking In
Hello, everyone! I hope you're enjoying your summer. I promised I'd check in occasionally and let you know what's up.
Book 4 - the Misfit Caravan - proceeds slowly but happily. I wish I could write faster, but the demands of a day job are paramount. (Gods would I love to be a full-time writer....) The only thing I can promise is that I truly have enjoyed every chapter I've written so far. I can't remember ever having such a rewarding writing experience. I really, really think a lot of you might like this book, if you enjoyed the first three.
No idea when it'll be done. The best I can promise is that I'm writing consistently. I even took 2 weeks of vacation time this month, spread throughout August, to give myself 2 extra days of writing a week. And it's working.
In other news, the new Patreon site is going great. REALLY great. I didn't think I'd get such a quick or enthusiastic response. For my middle and highest tiers (what I call the Principalities and Arcana tiers), I'm even posting two chapters of a standalone novel called "SABER" every month. I wrote this years ago, back when I was finishing LAST SUN. I think it has the potential to get dusted off and edited.... I'll see what people think. It's not set in the Tarot Sequence world -- it's set in a world where the supernatural is underground. It's a story about an urban faery named Alex who is sold into an arranged, rural marriage with a shapeshifting man named Caylin, who can turn into a saber-tooth cat. I wrote this novel as a "sweet romance" -- about Alex and Caylin and their household coming together as an unexpected family,
I've also been hosting two Patreon Zooms a month: one for the Principalities and Arcana, and another specifically for the Arcana. That highest patronage tier is largely geared towards writing craft lessons. I'm hoping to actually start writing a short story about Brand and Rune with them, to show how I create my writing from start to finish. This will be part of a line of stories I'm calling "Early Adventures", and features Rune and Brand in the early days of Half House. Really looking forward to getting this story completed -- it's due to be published in an anthology later this year.
(Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/KDEdwards)
I've also migrated back to Twitter -- I did try other social media sites, but Twitter still remains the widest audience I have. (And, thankfully, my mentions are still filled with awesome, supportive, kind, amazing readers.) If you follow me, I do publish a TTS "snippet" every week, under the hashtag #tarotsequencefriday or #tarotsequenceweekend. Sometimes I drop big huge "trailer moments" for the next book; sometimes I drop hints for future trilogies. I try to have fun with it.
So, anyway.... I'm alive. I am writing. I can promise this much: I freaking well will start writing Book 5 as soon as Book 4 is done. I don't want you ever to wait 2 years again for the next installment. At least I can say I used the time well. I have the clearest idea yet what happens in the second trilogy, and even the final and third trilogy. The outline is getting me excited. Dragons and storms and shipwrecks ahead..... :)
Thank you all for the wonderful reviews and support. I heart you all so much.

Patreon
For a long time now, I've tried to find a way to organize some of my free content in a way that doesn't rely too heavily on social media like Twitter. I also want to monetize some elements, which will help me with all sorts of annual costs, such as convention hotel and travel bills, hiring my own proofreader and diversity consultants for the series going forward, and covering the considerable cost of commissioning my own cover art for the series. (I opt to buy the artwork myself so that I can continue to use Micah Epstein for his wonderful covers; the only other option, as I understand it, is to transition to "in-house" covers from my print publisher, which I am personally wary about.)
It's important to me that I continue to post free "snippets" every week, as I do on Twitter and Blue Sky. But I'll also have new ways to share more extensive and deeper content, as well as a higher "pricing tier" designed to talk about the actual craft of writing. The breakdown of Patron options at present will be:
$1 SCION LEVEL
* Occasional TV/Film/Book/Graphic Novel reviews about my original and current creative inspirations.
* Follow me as I re-read my first trilogy for the first time in a long, long time. I'll do posts on my reactions, too.
$5 PRINCIPALITY LEVEL
* All Scion Level material
* Blog posts about my world and characters -- something that I can't really do in 280 characters.
* Deleted outtakes from Novel 4 -- I'm stumbling across a lot of "road trip" material that I just can't put into the final manuscript given my current contractual page limit. There are only so many places for Brand one-liners, and there are only so many Corbie scenes. So these deleted outtakes are....well, they exist, but off-page. I'll post some here, and maybe gather them into a little novelette later.
* One live Zoom session with Arcana and Principality patrons a month, where you can Q&A me on the Tarot Sequence. I'll record these sessions, too -- and the first one is this Saturday at 12pm EST!
$10 ARCANA LEVEL
* All Scion and Principality Level material
* One live Zoom session with Arcana patrons every month about Tarot Sequence and, more specifically, the craft of writing.
* A sneak peek at the real end of Chapter 1 of MISFIT CARAVAN -- because what happens involves the main Arcana Level project, which is....
* Bi-Monthly posts about a story called "TAVIS", which immediately precedes Book IV. You'll watch every stage of development -- from the chaotic, unsorted brainstorming notes; to the polishing that reveals key plot points; to the organized outline; to the finicky "Scene Notes" I create before I write every scene. I may even get time to write the story.... But the goal here is to talk about process.
* Once I finish TAVIS, I'll move onto another Tarot world story. The point of this level, other than an early look at extensive additional content, is to talk about the actual act of writing.
I also intend to build a non-Patreon site for people who won't or can't access Patreon content. That site will also enable me to set aside a group of monthly log-ins for people who might not be able to afford the Patreon cost. That will happen over the next month or two.
I hope you decide to check me out. The website link is: https://www.patreon.com/KDEdwards.

"Amnesia" - A short, short story
For anyone interested, I've been posting a series of small "snippets" every Friday under the twitter hashtag #tarotsequencefriday.
Today I splurged on a quick, 1,000-word short story called "AMNESIA." You can download it for free from my website:
https://kd-edwards.com/download/13/st...
Meanwhile, work on Book 4 is going well. (Really well. I am....excited. The entire arc for the second trilogy is coming along even better than I'd hoped.)
Be well,
And Happy Friday,
KD

The Eidolon is OUT!
The Eidolon is officially out in the wild!
The limited edition hardcover through Rainbow Crate has sold out. Many, many thanks to them for a truly stellar production. I've rarely seen ANY book put together that well. It's an honor to have something I wrote accompanied by such lavish extras like spray-painted edges, gold-embossed hardcovers, a reversible cover with two images, interior art, a glossary, and a map. I mean, damn.
And yesterday, the Audible version -- featuring the exceptional Josh Hurley, the narrator for the main Tarot Sequence series -- dropped along with an eBook version on Amazon.
What started as a modest novella expansion to The Hourglass Throne became a small novel, and explains what really happened to Max, Quinn and Anna while they were Lady Jade's captive. And since Hourglass Throne was my "book of secrets", I saved some of the best series bombs for this expansion book. (I have been waiting since Chapter 2 of Book 1 to share at least one of these secrets.)
Thank you all so much for the enthusiastic welcome to Eidolon. I'm bowled over by the reaction. I've said it before, and I'll say it here: my relationship with readers is one of the unexpected pleasures of being a published writer. I am so grateful for your support and excitement. I promise, it translates to momentum and motivation. It makes me want to wildly exceed your expectations.
And so: back to writing book 4, the Misfit Caravan. The readers will learn things in the Eidolon that even Rune doesn't know; and those secrets are very, very quickly bearing down on him. I cannot wait to share his reaction in TMC.
Be well, friends,
KD

The Eidolon
A quick update on THE EIDOLON -- the 200-page expansion to the story told in THE HOURGLASS THRONE, which also serves as the start of a new line of content called THE MAGNUS ACADEMY SERIES.
The limited edition hardcover is sold out! Many thanks to Rainbow Crate for the gorgeous work on it.
Pre-orders for the ePUB version, which will be initially available through Amazon's platform, are now live! THE EIDOLON will officially drop, in audio and eBook format, on February 28. This is the link, which I'll also tie to my Goodreads page!
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BRNGFFYY/...
The Audible pre-order link (and confirmation on the narrator -- which, fingers crossed, will hopefully be Josh Hurley again!) will be announced soon. The target release date is February 28, too.
I am extremely proud to share this novella (well, technically, a short novel) with you. It contains some surprises that may change your view of everything that's come before and give broad hints on future storylines. Spending so much time in the heads of Max, Quinn, and Anna was a special project, and I'm more convinced than ever it'll lead to an actual arc of Magnus Academy novels.
Thanks, as always, for your interest and support!

Interviews and Updates
Hello Goodreads folks! For those who don't follow me on Twitter (my main social media platform), there are some updates you might be interested in.
First, I teamed up with Keith & Ben at TGG Podcast to record a "spoiler interview." This is the one interview where any questions about THE HOURGLASS THRONE are answered -- things I'd never discuss usually due to spoilers. Avoid this if you haven't read the third book, but if you'd like to know more about what happened (and what MAY happen in the future), check the interview out here:
https://tggeeks.com/blog/2022/09/26/t...
We also released the second, reversible cover of THE EIDOLON, the novella (well, technically a short novel as of yesterday's word count) that tells the story of what Quinn, Max, and Anna experienced as Lady Jade's prisoner. This cover has my heart, because it's Quinn, and looks so much like he looks in my head.
https://twitter.com/KDEdwards_NC/stat...
I'll officially add the Goodreads page for EIDOLON as early as Friday. At present, it will be released in early 2023 in three formats:
1) An early, exclusive, limited edition hardcover by the folk at Rainbowcrate. I'll put the pre-order link below. The hardcover contains a bunch of items I'm happily adding -- a city map, a glossary, multiple pieces of interior art...It's been a joy working with Rainbowcrate.
https://rainbowcratebookbox.com/produ...
2) An audio version and a modestly priced eBook version will follow two months after the hardcover is released.
Hope everyone is doing well, and enjoying (maybe? depending on where you are?) some cooler fall weather.
All my best,
KD
