Andrea Lechner-Becker is a lot like her name, a little awkward and kinda funny. On a perfect day, she sits at a bar ingesting craft beers and talking to strangers. She believes everyone has a story to tell and deeply desires to tell as many of them as possible. She left a successful career as a marketing executive to commit full-time to storytelling. We'll see how that goes! ...more

Which one I use depends on what kind of block I have. For example, if I'm looking for a profession for a character, I use the games. If I'm searching the manuscript for "look" because I use it too much during dialogue scenes, I'll read how other authors deal with it. (less)

Second person just doesn’t work. It’s silly. And then some chapters are present tense while being in the past? Got outta ‘ere. Absurd.

Andrea Lechner-Becker is reading The Fifth Season: Second person never works. Right? It really shouldn’t. It’s so silly. One chapter it’s “you” and then in another it’s present tense, but that’s actually the past? Can’t work. Won’t work.

It does work. It works hard. It works well. Complex characters put in impossible situations … so, so good.

Beautifully written and I couldn't put it down. The atmosphere Arden created put me IN the war and I loved the characters and the magical realism components were very interesting. I dinged a star for two areas at the end:

“We try to stay as thin as possible - which also keeps us weak. When you're skinny, you have no body fat; when you have no body fat, you're cold all the time; and when you're cold all the time, you stay inside; and when you stay inside... you don't vote. I may be joking about that last part... but I'm not totally wrong. Ever stop to think that by keeping women eternally preoccupied with superficialities that we might be missing out on important things in life?”
