Aloha Richard,

Thank you for writing me and for your comments about your father and living in Pearl Harbor as a boy. I'm not sure if you read my memoir, but I talk about growing up in the area and serving as a surgical resident-physician at Tripler Army Medical Center.

I do believe life is full of balance..yin-yang and in order for us to appreciate all the beauty and joy in this world, we do at some point or another, have to experience all the richness of life, which unfortunately, does include suffering and tragedy... without that, we might not really be able to fully appreciate the nuances of joy. That's just my opinion. I do think there are some souls that enter this world, for whatever reason, who may not ever experience suffering or tragedy. And that may be a rare luxury, indeed.

Blessings to you and happy holidays.

Best wishes,

Hi Jalees!

I am SO sorry that I'm just now seeing your question!!! I randomly found it while preparing to upload something in my author profile!! AHHH... to be honest, I am still figuring out the ins and outs of marketing myself. I was never into social media during med school and residency. It all just felt so "icky" to me (as much as I love my selfies-lol)... but a lot of friends pushed me to do it, saying "We live online..." so I forced myself to sign up for all the social media websites (Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter...Goodreads) and just added anyone and everyone imaginable. Again, it feels icky at first, but the more you do it, it feels kind of fun and eventually you will find readers and like-minded people. Not everyone will want to read your book and that's fine! It doesn't mean you or your writing isn't good! It's just like TV, movies and music! Everyone has different tastes! Like food! we all love and like different things at different times in our lives, that's what makes life so beautiful so keep writing and putting yourself out there! There is something for everyone! Without marketing your work, nobody will know it's there! Thanks for adding me! xo (less)

Beyond the Oath: Confronting Online Harassment and Systemic Rot in Medicine

The Hippocratic Oath, a cornerstone of medical ethics, pledges physicians to "do no harm." Yet, in the digital age, and within the very institutions meant to heal, a different kind of harm persists: online harassment, trolling, and systemic undermining. As I navigate the aftermath of speaking my truth, the ongoing "non-anonymous ratings" and social media trolling from former colleagues reveal a st Read more of this blog post »

Love isn’t something you can cup in your hands, and I have to believe that means it’s something that can’t ever be lost.

The Exorcist steps are our private joke. The steep, pitch-black stairs a block off the Georgetown campus, the site where Father Karras dies in The Exorcist, are famously haunted, and I’ve always found those steps so slippery with rain and snow that I’m surprised they haven’t killed more joggers.

Writing is the closest thing we have to real magic. Writing is creating something out of nothing, is opening doors to other lands. Writing gives you power to shape your own world when the real one hurts too much. To stop writing would kill me.

“Imagine,” she kept murmuring. “All those lives lost. All that suffering for a cause that they didn’t even know if they believed in, just because their government was convinced domino theory was true. My God.”
