Richard Ferguson
Richard Ferguson asked Cindy Lee Neighbors:

In order to experience joy, must there be suffering? Sorry for the off-the-wall question, but I'm doing a bit of non-scientific research on the topic with authors. By the way, my father was a Marine officer and I have fond memories of living in Pearl Harbor from 1959-1961 as a boy.

Cindy Lee Neighbors Aloha Richard,

Thank you for writing me and for your comments about your father and living in Pearl Harbor as a boy. I'm not sure if you read my memoir, but I talk about growing up in the area and serving as a surgical resident-physician at Tripler Army Medical Center.

I do believe life is full of balance..yin-yang and in order for us to appreciate all the beauty and joy in this world, we do at some point or another, have to experience all the richness of life, which unfortunately, does include suffering and tragedy... without that, we might not really be able to fully appreciate the nuances of joy. That's just my opinion. I do think there are some souls that enter this world, for whatever reason, who may not ever experience suffering or tragedy. And that may be a rare luxury, indeed.

Blessings to you and happy holidays.

Best wishes,
Cindy
