It’s every mother’s worst nightmare. Liz’s beautiful eight-year-old son is dead … and it’s her fault for delaying the investigation when he first went missing. The tragedy will destroy her already fragile marriage. She will be ostracized by her friends, pilloried in the newspapers, and rejected by her own mother. Eventually, she will leave her hometown of Glasgow, Scotland, and seek a new life in San Francisco, California. She will arrive during the Summer of Love.

Welcome to the opening chapters of City of Redemption. If you are a parent, I dare you to read without crying the chapter in which Patrick goes missing. Parent or not, come along for the ride if you want a story of grief, intrigue and friendship surrounded by sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll.

City of Redemption is primarily about Liz settling in to San Francisco, the new friends she finds, and how she ends up helping the Black Panthers with some of their more clandestine activities. But the tragedy with her son is never far from her mind. Liz’s grief is a presence with her throughout the novel. It makes her reserved with the people in her San Francisco commune, but this reserve also protects her in some ways from the more dangerous aspects of the scene.

Liz, by the way, is a relatable character. The author shows us her faults as a young mom … she is young, selfish, and a bit irresponsible, but also dedicated to her son and certainly not a monster. Later, we see her broken, then matured by the tragedy.

Her grief is handled realistically. It comes up at natural moments, such as during conversations, drug trips, and other moments of vulnerability. Liz is sometimes seen having a private cry, even as she remains a strong character, functional though fragile. Masterfully, the author does not reveal all at once the whole story about what actually happened to Liz’s son Patrick. The reader will have to wait until nearly the end of the story to find out all the details, filled in progressively through flashbacks, memories, and conversations with Liz’s friends. As in an Alfred Hitchcock movie, the worst of the horror always happens “off screen” – that is, shown indirectly by being related by a third person or being revealed after it is already over. This extremely raw subject of a kidnapped child is very tastefully handled.

Like the tragedy with Patrick, the events in San Francisco are tastefully handled. Violence usually (not always) takes place off-screen, and is described matter-of-factly, not luridly. There are several very sexy scenes, but with one exception, nothing graphic. The characters’ dangerous lifestyle choices are not glamorized. Period details are spot-on, from the clothes to the cars to the music.

Music plays a major role in City of Redemption. We hear it on the radio, in the car, and live at concerts. Anyone who loves the music of the 50s and 60s will enjoy this aspect of it. Often a line or two is printed in italics, so that readers can hear the song in their heads. Fittingly, the songs often strike Liz as speaking directly to her situation at that moment. At the end of the book is a list of all the songs used, with the group who recorded them and the year they came out. Among others, there are “Stand By Me,” “Paint It Black,” “Don’t You Want Somebody To Love?,” “Love Me Do,” “Soul Man,” “Eve of Destruction.”

I do have a few, very minor quibbles with the book. First of all, the style is rather spare for the genre of book. Even drug trips are described in a very matter-of-fact way. This is good in some ways … the reader never gets confused, even when Liz is. The plain style moves the action forward quickly, making the book a page-turner. However, in scenes where not a lot of action is happening, and in descriptions of Liz’s thoughts, the plain style can get a little monotonous. I felt that a richer style of writing could have brought out more the latent tense or poignant emotions in the book.

Nor does the style do justice to the beauty of San Francisco. There are a few scenes that take place on the beach, and often we see the characters traveling through the picturesque, high hills of San Francisco, but mostly we have to imagine this stuff, because it is not evocatively described for us. The focus is always on the action and the dialogue, somewhat to the detriment of the scene.

This very plain style of writing extends to the transitions into flashbacks. Usually it is pretty clear when a flashback is happening, but in one critical scene near the end, the transitions were inadequate and I, at least, was confused for a few minutes until I realized the narrative was giving a glimpse of the day before.

Despite these minor flaws, the book is poignant, tense, well-researched and well-plotted. I give City of Redemption four out of four stars.

Perfect read for All Hallows Eve coming up! Followed by Day of The Dead.Great Ritual for that time included in book along with an ESP Quiz.Read excerpt of ritual below:* * *

HALLOWEEN, A SPOOKY good time and all for amusement, right?

The night is much more than just for fun. All Hallows Eve or Halloween and November First, are sacred times for many throughout the world to honor the dead. The Celts and Mexicans honor their elderly, ancestors, and the dead with special rituals and celebrations on those days. The Catholic Church combined the pagan beliefs with their own to create a day to honor the saints on November first. Celtic pagans believed the veils between the two worlds of the living and dead thinned or dropped so spirits could walk the earth to visit their living relatives before crossing back over to the “underworld.”
The spirits were not only our loved ones, but also all spirits who want to walk the earth, feel alive and connected to the living.

During the spirits’ visit, spooky things happened, as you can imagine. The Celts disguised themselves to waylay troublesome or evil spirits so they wouldn’t recognize and haunt people. Tradition warned people, especially the elderly, the sick and the young, to stay safely hidden inside so they wouldn’t be grabbed and taken to the underworld. This is a good time to invite spirits you want to visit your home. You can prepare for visiting spirits with these two welcoming rituals. One is more elaborate and the other simple. You can do all or a bit of each. Design a ritual to best suit your interest and need. No matter which you choose to do, both are a lovely way to remember your loved ones and feel their presence.

Before it is dark on Halloween get a photograph of the deceased you would like to visit and a pen in perhaps their favorite color. You’ll also need paper, flowers and incense of your choice. Also gather white, black and orange candles. The white candle is for protection and to receive clear visions.

The black candle is for the mystical, spiritual unknown, and the orange one for the season’s color of renewal. Have a burning vessel (ashtray or cauldron,) matches to light your incense and candles, and a full lipped glass or bowl of water.

The Haight/Ashbury also appears in my first novel, The Skye in June.

Yes, I was part of the '60's Haight scene in San Francisco and write with the experience of the times and people who helped change society's rules. Hippies, Panther's, Hell's Angels - riding through the Haight, love, protests, and violence all wrapped into the times.

More about the story below.

The Season of Sharing is 12 months a year.
Synopsis

It is 1983 and Liz MacKay waits for parole for the murder of former roommate, Ricky Martinez. Is she guilty? Or is she serving time for another’s crime?

In 1967, partly to blame for her young son's death and abandoned by her husband, Liz Mackay flees Scotland in disgrace, hoping for a second chance at love and life. She arrives in San Francisco during the Summer of Love to lose herself among the groovy people. She joins a commune; a curious mix of Black Panthers trying to change the world, a Vietnam vet seeking inner peace, a flamboyant hairdresser ready for fame and love, a flower child and her drug dealer boyfriend who changes girlfriends often. At first, Liz is happy to have found a welcoming home, but as her new roommates pry into her mysterious past Liz's search for a "jolly good time" brings more grief and a worsening drug addiction. Liz is unwittingly drawn into the dark underbelly of violence and addiction with a callous drug-dealer and a treacherous plot to bring down the Black Panthers. Her unlikely friendship with Black Panther Toni Bordeaux, leads Liz to redemption for her shameful past.

The strong plot and dialogue of "City of Redemption" exposes the seldom seen seedy side of the Summer of Love. It is a vividly recounted story of lies, betrayal, sex, drugs and murder takes place during an unforgettable time and place in history.

ABOUT THE STORY: June MacDonald's fate is sealed the day she is born when her mother defies her husband by not naming their new daughter after a Catholic saint, as is their tradition. No one can foresee that June will grow up to threaten the family by revealing her mother's secret past in the Scottish Highlands. After a tragedy the Scottish MacDonalds emigrate to San Francisco in hopes for a new start.

HOW THE STORY CAME TO BE: My mother's love of books and her great imagination for storytelling inspired me to write "The Skye in June." It's a tribute to my mother and five zany sisters. In it I share some of our history as Scottish immigrants and coming of age during the 1960's in San Francisco. It began as a screenplay because that's how it unfolded for me as I saw characters, felt moods and heard their conversations. Especially enjoyable was the sisters' discussions, which at times was rather hilarious. Before putting it on paper, I'd speak aloud each one's words. My husband finally stopped asking if I was talking to him or "the MacDonalds" (or whomever was being created).        Because my protagonist and I share the same first name I've been asked if it's an autobiography. Some situations and events did occur but the majority of the story is my imagination hence a rather thinly veiled autobiography set in a fictional framework. Why did I call my protagonist June? Fact: Against my father's wishes my mother named me June, a name my father declared was a "heathen name" and not a saint's. I don't believe I'll be the first Saint June.

My other novel, "City of Redemption." and non-fictions, "How to Talk With Spirits: Seances, Mediums, Ghost Hunts" and "The Timeless Counselor: The Best Guide to a Psychic Reading", which was the best selling book of a new author at the 1991 Whole Life NY Expo.

WITCH WEDDING FOR YOU

It's that time of year for weddings, and that includes witches, pagans and those who honor the goddesses.

Their wedding dresses and rituals could be a bit different from what we've grown to believe is the "norm" for after all, they are not the "norm" in society. There's the "jumping the broom" and hand fasting ribbons.

In my novel, "The Skye in June" the protagonist declares herself a witch. Now, why would a nice wee Catholic school girl do that?

Mark your calendar for this book as FREE eBook April 25th - the 29th. It's the book's 10th Anniversary. Happy to say, has sold every month since it's debut.

FREE - GIVE-AWAY eBook

onlinebookclub.org is offering a give-away for my first novel The Skye in June. See link to at bottom of blog
- has 344 ratings on Goodreads.

It's a historical novel - a story with laughs, sorrow, adventure, anger, the usual family drama. Has a mystery, with the answer to be found in the Isle of Skye.

Learn some Scottish sayings and customs, walk the streets of one of San Francisco's well-known neighborhoods back in the day, watch the family change over the years.

The MacDonalds are a Scottish immigrant family who emigrated to San Francisco, California in the mid 1950s after a family tragedy.

The four girls come of age during the changing environs of the 1960s - a wild and crazy time.
They live in a most well-known neighborhood of the city that most now know of as The Castro, but is actually named Eureka Valley.

Eureka Valley or "The Valley" has old time residents called it, is the heart of the city - sitting almost right dab in the center of it of San Francisco if you will.

It's a historical novel as the story takes you up and down Castro Street and you can stop at one of the most historical businesses which continues to thrive today - Cliff's Department store.

Take in a movie at The Castro Theatre, which was a hubbub for the neighborhood kids who clamored to it, waiting in long lines every Saturday.
